Where to Buy Alcohol Detector Devices in India: A Buyer's Checklist for Installers and Fleet Managers

    09/10/2026
Buying an alcohol detector is easy. Buying the right one for your gate, your fleet and your policy takes a little more thought. The sensor inside, whether the test is contactless or uses a mouthpiece, whether it prints or photographs the result, and who will calibrate it next year all decide whether the device protects your site or ends up in a drawer. This buyer's guide covers the full KTI range of contact, contactless, camera, printer and wall-mounted alcohol detectors with their mouthpieces and spares, a checklist to compare models, how to commission and use a detector once it arrives, and what to buy for different kinds of sites.

    The buyer's checklist
    • Sensor type. Fuel cell (electrochemical) sensors are specific to alcohol and hold calibration well, so they suit testing you will rely on. Semiconductor sensors cost less and are fine for screening, but can react to other vapours and drift faster.
    • Contactless or mouthpiece. Contactless units screen a queue quickly and hygienically. Mouthpiece units take a deep-lung sample for a result you can record.
    • Printer and camera. A printed slip is a document HR can file. A camera shows whose breath was tested, which stops proxy blowing.
    • Memory and download. Check how many tests the device stores and how you get them onto a PC.
    • Calibration and spares. Ask for the calibration interval, who will do it and how long the device will be away. Check that sensor modules, mouthpieces and printer rolls are available.
    • Running cost. Count a year of mouthpieces, printer rolls and calibration, not just the price of the device.
    • GST invoice and warranty. You need both for your asset register and for any service claim.
How to commission and use your detector, step by step
    1. Check the box. Confirm the model, serial number, accessories, calibration date and warranty card against the invoice.
    2. Set the date, time and limit. Set the clock so records are correct, and set the alarm level to match your company policy.
    3. Mount fixed units properly. Fix wall units at mouth height at the gate or driver room, out of direct rain and sun, with a steady power supply.
    4. Train two people per shift. Show them how to warm up the device, change mouthpieces, read the result and print or save it.
    5. Test correctly. Ask the person to wait 15 minutes after eating, drinking, smoking or using mouthwash. For contact tests, fit a new mouthpiece and ask for a long, steady blow.
    6. Record every result. Keep a register of pass, fail or refusal, with the time, device serial number and tester's name.
    7. Act on a fail. Confirm with a recorded test, remove the person from driving or risky work, and follow your HR procedure.

What to buy for your site
A fixed test point at the entry makes testing part of every shift start.
    Maintenance tips
Calibrate on the schedule in the manual and put the next due date on the device. Replace semiconductor sensor modules as the maker specifies; the AL6000 module, for example, is due every 500 tests or once a year, whichever comes first. Keep detectors away from heat, sanitiser, perfume and cleaning solvents. Use a new mouthpiece for every contact test. Download records monthly, keep printer rolls in stock, and service wall units when the flow-detection or self-check warnings appear.
    Frequently asked questions
What is the legal limit in India?
Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 sets 30 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, detected by a breath analyser, for driving. A company may set a stricter rule, such as zero tolerance, for its own drivers and operators.
    Can a detector be fooled?
A short, weak blow is the usual attempt. Professional units check the flow and reject it. A camera stops someone else blowing for the driver.
Can I use the result in a disciplinary inquiry?
Only if your policy allows it, the device is within calibration and you kept a record. A printed or photographed result is stronger than a reading on a screen. Take legal advice before relying on it.
