How to Choose the Right Metal Detector Machine for Schools, Malls and Factories

    21/10/2026
A metal detector at the gate is only as good as the choice behind it. Pick one that is too basic and it misses what matters; pick one that is set wrong and it beeps at every belt, so guards stop paying attention and queues build up at the gate. The right metal detector machine depends on who walks through, how many people come at once and what you are trying to stop. This guide covers the full KT India range of door frame (DFMD), pole type and hand held (HHMD) metal detectors, how to choose and set them up, and what to install at schools, malls and factories.

Schools need a detector that catches what matters without stopping every child for a belt buckle.

Door frame, pole type or hand held?
    • Door frame metal detector (DFMD): a walk-through arch that screens every person who enters. Best for any entrance with steady footfall.
    • Pole type detector: two slim poles instead of a full arch. Quick to set up, easy to move, and good for events, temporary checkpoints and gates where a full frame won't fit.
    • Hand held metal detector (HHMD): used after a DFMD alarm to find exactly where the metal is, and on its own at small gates, staff entrances and for bag checks. Every DFMD needs at least one HHMD beside it.
How to choose, step by step
    1. Count your peak footfall. A school gate at 8 am or a mall on a Sunday evening sets the requirement. Plan one DFMD lane for every few hundred people per hour, and add lanes rather than rushing people through one.
    2. Decide how many zones you need. A single zone detector tells you that metal is present. Three and six zone models such as the Hope 700243 or 6 Zone D 1065 show roughly where. With 18 or 33 zones, the guard can see where on the body to check, so frisking is faster and less intrusive.
    3. Check sensitivity and discrimination. You want a detector that can be tuned to ignore keys, coins and belt buckles but still alarm on a knife or a weapon. Look for adjustable sensitivity levels and good anti-interference.
    4. Think about the location. Outdoor or semi-open gates need a waterproof base and a frame rated for heat and dust. Keep the DFMD away from moving metal such as lifts, shutters, motors and heavy cables, which cause false alarms.
    5. Add the features you will actually use: footfall counting for reports, CCTV to record each alarm, software or TCP/IP to monitor several gates, and battery backup for power cuts.
    6. Pair it with hand held detectors and, at vehicle gates, an under vehicle search mirror.
    7. Plan installation and calibration. Fix the frame level on firm ground, set sensitivity on site with test items, and train guards on the alarm-and-frisk routine.

The door frame tells you that something is there; the hand held detector shows you where.
Kit by site type Factory exit in India with a door frame metal detector at the turnstile and a guard checking a worker with a hand held detector
In factories, exit screening protects your stock as much as your people.
    Keep it working
Test the DFMD every morning by walking through with a standard test piece, and log the result. Recalibrate after moving the frame or adding new equipment nearby. Keep the frame dry and clean, and check cables, the base and the boots for damage. Charge hand held detectors at the end of each shift and keep a spare. Have a service visit at least once a year; KT India also stocks spares such as the DFMD controller.
    Frequently asked questions
How many zones do I need?
For a school or office with modest footfall, 3 to 6 zones is plenty. For a mall, metro or stadium, 8 to 18 zones speeds up frisking. Use 33 zones for maximum-security sites.
Are walk-through metal detectors safe for pregnant women and people with pacemakers?
Walk-through detectors use a low-strength magnetic field. As a courtesy, many sites offer a hand held check or manual frisking instead. Anyone with a medical implant should follow their doctor's advice.
Why does my DFMD keep giving false alarms?
Usually the sensitivity is set too high, the frame is not level, or there is metal or electrical interference nearby. Recalibrate on site, and keep the frame away from lifts, shutters and motors.
Can one DFMD handle a school gate?
Only if entry is spread out. If everyone arrives within 15 minutes, plan two lanes or add a pole type detector at peak time.
