LED Display Board Buying Guide: Indoor vs Outdoor Signage for Indian Businesses

    15/10/2026

An LED sign that looks sharp at the evening opening can turn into a pale panel at noon, or go dark after the first monsoon. Indoor and outdoor LED boards are built differently, and the most common mistake shops and offices make is putting the wrong one in the wrong place. Chosen well, an LED board keeps your rates, offers, token numbers and messages clear all day. This guide covers the full KTI range of LED rate boards, moving message boards, token displays and digital signage screens for shops, jewellers, banks, restaurants, clinics and showrooms, how to choose between indoor and outdoor, how to install and update a board, and what suits each kind of business.

Indoor or outdoor: how to choose

    • Brightness. Outdoor boards must compete with direct sun, so they are specified at several times the brightness of indoor boards. An indoor board behind a west-facing window will wash out at noon.
    • Sealing. Outdoor cabinets need weather sealing, including at the cable entry. Ask for the IP rating; IEC 60529 is the standard behind IP codes.
    • Pitch and distance. A board read across a counter can use a finer pitch. A board read from across the road needs larger characters and a coarser pitch.
    • Colour. A single-colour red or amber board is bright, cheap to run and ideal for numbers. Full colour is for pictures and video, and draws more power.
    • Updating. Decide who changes the message and how: a remote, a phone app, USB or a network. A rate board with yesterday's rate does more harm than good.

Rate boards and token displays are indoor products. Mount them inside, facing customers. For a sign on the facade or above the shutter, ask KT India for a made-to-order moving LED display board built for outdoor use, with a sealed cabinet and the brightness to beat the sun.

How to install and update your board, step by step

    1. Check the spot at the right time. Stand where customers will read it, at the hour it matters most, often early afternoon.
    2. Choose and size the board. Pick indoor or outdoor, colour and character height for that distance and light.
    3. Plan the mounting. Fix it to a solid wall or frame at a height people can read, and leave access to the controller for servicing.
    4. Give it safe power. Use a proper socket or a dedicated supply with an MCB and surge protection, especially where the voltage fluctuates in summer.
    5. Set up the content. Pair the remote or app, load your shop name, rates or messages, and set the brightness for the location.
    6. Train the person who updates it. Make the person who changes the gold rate or the offer do it once before you sign off.
    7. Keep it current. Update rates the moment they change, and refresh offers and notices regularly so customers keep looking.

    Maintenance tips

Wipe the display face every month with a soft dry cloth. After the first heavy rain, check outdoor boards for water at the cable entry. Keep a spare module and power supply for larger boards, so a dead section is fixed in minutes. Note the app login and remote in a safe place so a new staff member can update the board. Switch off or dim boards after closing to save power and extend LED life.

    Frequently asked questions

Can an indoor board be used outside?
No. Indoor boards are not bright enough for sun or sealed against rain. A porch that gets noon sun counts as outdoors.

    How is the content updated?
Depending on the board, by remote, an Android app, USB or a network. Choose the method the person updating it finds easiest.

What does it cost to run?
It depends on size, colour, brightness and hours. Ask for the wattage, multiply by your tariff and the hours it will be on. Single-colour boards cost far less to run than full colour.

Can I get a custom size?
Yes. Moving LED boards and LED display boards are made to order. Share the size, content and location through Enquiry Now.
