Choosing the Right Industrial LED Display for Factories, Warehouses and Control Rooms

    12/10/2026
An LED board on the shop floor only works if the right person can read it from where they stand. An accident-free-days board that is a grey blur from the gate, or a production figure that lives on a supervisor's phone, does nothing. Chosen well, an industrial LED display keeps safety, output and compliance in front of everyone, every shift, without a meeting. This guide covers the KTI range of industrial LED displays, how to choose the size, pixel pitch and colour, how to install and run a board, and which displays suit the gate, shop floor, dock and control room.

How to choose size, pitch and colour
Start with viewing distance. Pixel pitch is the gap between LEDs in millimetres: P4 is about 4 mm, P10 is about 10 mm. Display engineers use a rule of thumb that the minimum comfortable viewing distance in metres is roughly the pitch number. So a P10 board reads well from about 10 metres and beyond, and a P4 board suits detailed figures read from closer. Then choose the character height, not just the cabinet size; a big board with a small font still fails. Pick colour for the message. Single red or amber is bright and cheap for numbers. Multicolour helps where you show pictures, such as PPE icons, or status colours. Finally, decide where the data comes from: a keypad, a mobile app, LAN, or a direct link to your PLC. If the safety officer can't update the figure in a minute, it won't be updated.
How to install and run an LED board, step by step
    1. Stand where the reader stands. Measure the distance from the furthest person who must read the board, and check the sun and glare at the time it matters.
    2. Pick the board. Match pitch and character height to that distance, and choose an outdoor, sealed cabinet such as the IP65 pollution board for gates and yards.
    3. Prepare the mounting. Fix the wall bracket or structure for the board's weight and, outdoors, the wind. Leave access for servicing modules later.
    4. Give it clean power. Run a dedicated supply with an MCB and surge protection. Brown-outs and spikes kill LEDs faster than age.
    5. Connect the data. Pair the mobile app, connect LAN, or link the production display to your PLC or counter.
    6. Name the owner. Give one person per shift the job of updating the board, and show them how.
    7. Check it daily. Glance at the board at the start of each shift to make sure the figure is current and every segment lights.

Vehicle calling boards keep the dock moving without shouting.
    Maintenance tips
Wipe the display face every month with a soft dry cloth; dust dims the board. Check outdoor cabinets after the first monsoon rains for water at the cable entry. Keep a few spare LED modules and a spare power supply, so a dead section can be swapped in minutes. Note the app login and password in the maintenance file, not on one person's phone. Run boards at the brightness the location needs, not at full power all night.
    Frequently asked questions
Which pitch for a board read from 15 metres?
By the rule of thumb, P10 works from about 10 metres, so it is a sensible start at 15 metres. Check a sample at the real spot and in real light.
    Can the board update itself?
Yes, if you choose the matching input. Production displays can take counts from a PLC or counter; safety boards update from a mobile app or LAN.
Can an indoor board go outdoors?
No. Outdoor boards need a sealed cabinet and higher brightness for sun and rain.
