Pre-Use Visual and Mechanical Inspection
Before every deployment in electrical substations, breaker rooms, or industrial facilities, safety personnel must conduct a thorough physical inspection of the entire Honeywell INSKCP8RB ensemble. This includes inspecting the 8 cal/cm² coat (INACC8RB), pants (INACP8RB), balaclava (AFHOOD10), Class-E helmet headgear with PrismShield face shield (AS1000HAT-SPL), and Honeywell XC blue clear eyewear (1011027HS). Check all flame-retardant 100% natural cotton fabrics for tears, punctures, fraying, worn seams, or heavy mechanical abrasion.
Inspect all hardware and fastening mechanisms to ensure proper operational fit and thermal shielding. Verify that the heavy-duty zipper and hook-and-loop (Velcro) dual front closures, coat release flap, silicone ID label, knitted collar, hanger loop, pull-through waist adjustment tabs, knee darts, gusseted crotch seams, and pant leg closures function without binding or separation. Examine the AS1000HAT-SPL face shield lens and headgear assembly for cracks, structural compromises, severe pitting, or scratches that impair visibility and optical performance.
Laundering Specifications and Wash Temperature Limits
Proper laundering is mandatory to maintain the durable flame-retardant properties and self-extinguishing characteristics of the natural cotton fabric. Garments must be laundered thoroughly using conventional laundry detergent only. The accumulation of grease, oily soils, hydraulic fluids, and other flammable contaminants drastically degrades the garment's 8 cal/cm² thermal performance and creates severe secondary ignition hazards during an electrical arc event.
Adhere strictly to standard thermal laundering thresholds: wash water temperature must not exceed 50°C (122°F). After completing the wash cycle with detergent, tumble dry the coat, pants, and balaclava at normal temperature settings. Ensure the garments are fully dry before packing or returning them to inventory.
Prohibited Cleaning Agents and Chemical Restrictions
Using improper cleaning chemistry will permanently destroy the flame-resistant integrity of the fabric. Strictly adhere to the following laundering chemical prohibitions:
- Chlorine Bleaches: Never use bleaching agents containing sodium hypochlorite, as they chemically degrade the flame-retardant treatment.
- Oxygen Bleaches: Do not introduce hydrogen peroxide or related oxygen-based bleaching formulations.
- Soaps: Never use natural soaps formulated from salts of fatty acids; these leave flammable soapy residues on the cotton fibers.
- Additives: Fabric softeners and laundry starch are strictly prohibited, as they coat the natural cotton fibers with combustible chemical residues.
Laundering and Care Reference
| Maintenance Parameter | Specification / Allowed Procedure | Prohibited Practice |
|---|
| Washing Agent | Standard laundry detergent only | Fatty acid soaps, fabric softeners, laundry starch |
| Bleach Chemistry | None | Sodium hypochlorite (chlorine), hydrogen peroxide (oxygen) |
| Maximum Water Temp | 50°C (122°F) | Temperatures exceeding 50°C (122°F) |
| Drying Cycle | Tumble dry at normal temperature | Excessive industrial baking cycles |
| Incident Exposure | Decommission and destroy immediately | Reusing garment after an arc flash exposure |
Storage Parameters and UV Protection
Store the Honeywell 8 cal/cm² kit within its supplied kit bag inside a controlled stockroom environment. Keep the ensemble shielded from rapid fluctuations in ambient temperature and humidity levels. Garments, headgear, and optical shields must be kept away from direct sunlight and continuous ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which degrades untreated surface finishes, textile tensile strength, and optical polycarbonate integrity over time.
Retirement Protocols and Post-Incident Decommissioning
Never reuse any component of the Honeywell 8 cal/cm² PPE kit following an arc flash event. Exposure to an electrical arc creates extreme incident energy that permanently compromises the molecular structure of the flame-retardant cotton fibers, headgear, and face shield assembly. Even if visible damage appears minimal or localized, the garment ensemble must be decommissioned, removed from service, and replaced immediately. In addition, retire any garment containing unremovable oil or grease residues, cut fabric, or damaged dual closure systems that cannot be restored to standard specification.
