Routine Cleaning and Decontamination Protocol
To preserve hygiene, structural flexibility, and user safety, the Honeywell 5500 Series elastomeric half-mask facepiece should be cleaned and disinfected after each operational shift. Before washing, remove all threaded Honeywell North N-Series particulate filters, chemical cartridges, or conversion adaptors. Cartridges and filters must never be immersed in water or exposed to cleaning chemicals.
Wash the disassembled elastomeric facepiece in warm water with a mild neutral detergent or an approved disinfectant cleaner. The wash water temperature must not exceed 43°C (110°F) to avoid compromising the molded thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) skirt and polypropylene components. Alternatively, intermediate surface cleaning can be performed using compatible disinfectant wipes. Thoroughly rinse the facepiece in clean, warm water to remove all residual detergent, then allow it to air-dry completely in a clean environment away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight.
Pre-Operational Inspection and Seal Integrity Verification
Before every donning cycle, inspect the entire facepiece assembly for signs of mechanical wear, cracking, distortion, chemical damage, or soil accumulation. Examine the grey TPE sealing flange for loss of elasticity, paying close attention to the variable-thickness nose bridge and chin areas. Ensure the woven elastic nylon head harness straps retain proper elasticity and that the cradle yoke is free of stress fractures.
Verify that both inhalation valve flaps and the exhalation valve flap seat cleanly against their respective ports without curling, sticking, or tearing. Once donned, always verify facepiece sealing by completing both negative and positive pressure user seal checks:
- Negative Pressure Seal Check: Cover the inhalation cartridge connection inlets using the palms of both hands, inhale gently, and hold your breath for several seconds. The facepiece should collapse slightly inward toward the face with no inward air leakage detected along the sealing perimeter.
- Positive Pressure Seal Check: Cover the exhalation valve guard opening with the palm of your hand and exhale gently into the mask. The facepiece should hold a slight positive pressure without outward air escaping around the facial seal.
Avoid excessive tightening of the upper head harness straps, as overtightening can distort the nasal bridge flange and induce seal leakage. Note that facial hair, stubble, or deep facial scars that cross the sealing flange will breach the gas-tight boundary and cause seal failure.

Storage and Service Life Handling
Store cleaned and fully dried facepieces in clean, sealed storage bags or designated PPE lockers away from contaminated industrial atmospheres, dust, direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and excessive moisture. The respirator must be stored in a relaxed state without external mechanical pressure or heavy items placed on top of it, ensuring the pre-shaped TPE sealing contours and low-profile dead air space geometry do not become permanently deformed.
