Donning Procedure, Cartridge Assembly, and User Seal Checks

Proper installation, fitting, and seal verification of the Honeywell 5500 Series elastomeric half-mask respirator are required to achieve its rated Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 10 in Air-Purifying Respirator (APR) mode under OSHA standards. Before entering any non-IDLH industrial environment containing at least 19.5% oxygen by volume, operators must systematically inspect, assemble, don, and verify the seal of the facepiece.

Pre-Use Inspection

Examine the grey thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) facepiece skirt for cuts, tears, distortion, or embedded foreign matter. Check that the dual rigid polypropylene cartridge connectors are clean, secure, and undamaged. Ensure the rubber inhalation valve flaps (part number 770017) and the exhalation valve flap (part number 770018) rest completely flat against their respective valve seats without curling, cracking, or debris accumulation.

Cartridge and Filter Assembly

The Honeywell 5500 Series facepiece is supplied without filters or cartridges, allowing facility managers to match protection to site-specific airborne hazards:

  • Cartridge Selection: Align approved Honeywell North N-Series threaded cartridges or filters (such as N95, R95, P100 particulate filters, or chemical gas/vapor cartridges) with the twin polypropylene lateral ports.
  • Attachment: Screw each cartridge clockwise into the port until firmly seated against the elastomeric flange. The direct cartridge-to-facepiece seal geometry eliminates redundant gaskets and ensures an airtight mechanical connection without requiring secondary tools.
  • Dual Balance: Verify that both ports are fitted with identical, matched cartridges or filters to maintain balanced inhalation airflow and uniform facepiece weight distribution.

Donning Procedure and Harness Adjustment

The respirator utilizes a 4-point harness assembly with a contoured head cradle yoke and 100% latex-free woven elastic nylon straps to distribute pressure evenly without pulling hair:

  1. Position the facepiece cup over the bridge of the nose and sweep downward to cradle the chin firmly. The variable wall thickness across the sealing flange delivers flexible compliance across the nasal bridge and structural stability under the chin.
  2. Pull the head cradle over the crown of the head so it rests securely without twisting the upper harness webbing.
  3. Grasp the bottom elastic neck straps, bring them behind the neck below the ears, and engage the hook-and-clasp hardware.
  4. Tighten the upper cradle straps first by pulling backward on the strap ends to snug the facepiece onto the nose bridge. Avoid overtightening, as excessive tension can distort the nasal sealing edge.
  5. Snug the lower neck straps to pull the bottom of the mask flat against the jawline and chin contour.

Mandatory User Seal Checks

A user seal check must be conducted every single time the respirator is donned prior to entering any hazardous zone:

Check TypeExecution MethodAcceptance Criteria
Negative Pressure Seal CheckPlace the palms of both hands lightly over the face of both N-Series cartridge or filter inlets without distorting mask geometry. Inhale gently and hold breath for 5 to 10 seconds. The facepiece skirt should collapse slightly toward the face and remain collapsed without inward air leakage or fluttering along the sealing edge.
Positive Pressure Seal CheckPlace the palm of one hand completely over the exhalation valve guard opening (part number 770020). Exhale gently into the facepiece.Slight positive pressure should build up inside the facepiece without any air escaping outward past the facial contact perimeter.

If inward or outward air leakage is detected during either check, reposition the facepiece, readjust the woven elastic straps, and repeat both seal checks. Note that facial hair, stubble, or deep facial scars passing under the TPE sealing perimeter will breach the gas-tight boundary, failing qualitative and quantitative fit testing requirements.
