Pre-Installation Siting and Environmental Considerations
Proper mechanical siting of the GST I-9104 Intelligent Ultraviolet Flame Detector is critical for reliable flame detection across its 185 nm to 260 nm spectral response range. Field technicians must verify that the planned mounting location provides an unobstructed optical view of the protected hazard zone. The detector must not be sited where the optical sensor window is exposed to direct or indirect sunlight, or where strong artificial ultraviolet radiation sources—such as halogen lighting, tungsten lamps, welding operations, electrical arcing, sparks, or X-rays—are active in the line of sight. Furthermore, the unit is not suitable for applications where fires smolder without open flaming or where thick smoke spreads prior to flame ignition.
The ambient operating environment must remain within -20°C to +55°C with a relative humidity at or below 95% (non-condensing), conforming to its IP21 ingress protection rating. To prevent site contamination by construction dust and moisture, store the ABS enclosure (finished in RAL 9016 white) in its protective packaging and handle with care to avoid mechanical collision, surface friction, or squeezing. Physical installation of the detector head should occur just before final system commissioning.
Base Mounting and Conduit Preparation
The I-9104 detector mounts directly onto the GST DZ-03 Common Detector Base. The base features mounting slots designed to accommodate standard electrical junction boxes or surface conduit back boxes.
- Base Model: GST DZ-03 Common Detector Base (ordered separately).
- Mounting Hole Spacing: 45 mm to 75 mm pitch.
- Physical Dimensions: 103 mm diameter by 53.5 mm height when mounted on the base (detector alone measures 100 mm diameter by 41 mm height, with an approximate weight of 110 g).
Field Wiring and Electrical Loop Connections
Before initiating field wiring, completely disconnect power from the loop circuit originating from the GST Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP). All loop wiring requires copper-core cable with a cross-sectional area of 1.0 mm² or greater. The detector loop operates via a two-wire non-polarized configuration. Field conductors from the FACP loop terminate at any two diagonal terminals on the DZ-03 base. Ensure all cable entries are properly routed and secured to preserve the dust-proof and damp-proof construction of the mounting interface.
Electronic Addressing and Sensitivity Configuration
Device configuration is performed on site using the GST P-9910B Hand Held Programmer. The programmer connects directly to the detector to read and adjust the internal addressing and fire detection parameters prior to final system activation:
- Loop Address Range: Electronically assigned to any single address from 1 to 242.
- Sensitivity Level I: Calibrated for detection distances up to 25 m (rated using a 2000 g industrial ethanol test fire in a 33 cm x 33 cm x 5 cm container).
- Sensitivity Level II: Intermediate detection distance up to 17 m.
- Sensitivity Level III: Short-range detection distance up to 12 m.
Detector Insertion and System Commissioning
Once the DZ-03 base is securely fastened and all loop wiring is verified for correct termination across the circuit, align the bottom of the I-9104 detector head with the base and rotate the detector clockwise until it clicks firmly into position. After all detectors on the loop are mounted, restore power to the circuit.
The detector operates on a nominal Loop 24V supply (acceptable operational range of 12 VDC to 28 VDC). System power-up takes 5 seconds or less, during which standby current consumption remains at 2 mA or less. During normal operational polling from the FACP, the integrated red LED indicator flashes periodically. In the event of an open flame alarm, the action current rises to 2.5 mA or less and the red LED illuminates steadily. Clearing an alarm requires an instantaneous power interruption on the loop circuit lasting no more than 5 seconds at a residual voltage of 2.5 VDC or lower.
