FAAC 844 R 3 PH Industrial Sliding Gate Operator Installation & Commissioning Guide

Mechanical Foundation & Operator Mounting

The FAAC 844 R 3 PH gearmotor (ref. KTI02006002844P) requires a stable, rigid concrete foundation capable of handling the high dynamic loads exerted by heavy industrial sliding gates weighing up to 2,200 kg. Mechanical anchoring is executed using an optional galvanised steel foundation plate. This plate incorporates integrated height and lateral adjustment channels, allowing installers to level the operator precisely relative to the gate travel line and rack pitch.

The physical footprint of the unit measures 275 mm (length) by 191 mm (width) by 397 mm (height), with an assembled weight of 15 kg including factory-filled FAAC OIL XD 220 lubrication oil. The lower and upper half-body housings are manufactured from high-resistance pressure-cast aluminium treated with a protective cataphoresis finish, topped by a rugged ABS enclosure cover that shields the drive mechanism from environmental exposure within its IP 44 ingress rating.

Drive Pinion Selection & Rack Engagement

The mechanical transmission must be configured according to site velocity and gate mass requirements using standard module gear racks and compatible drive pinions:

  • Z12 Pinion Configuration: Engineered for maximum load capacities up to 2,200 kg. Delivers a linear gate transit speed of 7.2 m/min.
  • Z16 Pinion Configuration: Engineered for intermediate loads up to 1,600 kg. Increases transit velocity to 9.5 m/min.

During mechanical installation, verify proper meshing clearance between the pinion and the gate rack along the entire stroke length. Avoid resting the total gate weight onto the motor drive shaft; maintain a minimal uniform operational clearance between the tooth tip and the rack root to avoid mechanical strain on the 1:30 internal reduction screw gearing.

Inductive Limit-Switch & Stroke Calibration

Travel limit sensing relies on a contactless inductive limit-switch assembly actuated by dedicated metal target plates mounted directly at the opposing extremities of the gate rack. Mount the plates so they pass within the detection field of the inductive sensor as the leaf reaches full open and full closed positions. Contactless inductive operation eliminates mechanical fatigue, wear, and winter freeze-up failures across its operational temperature spectrum of -20°C to +55°C.

Torque Adjustment & Mechanical Clutch Setup

The operator features an integrated twin-disk anti-crushing clutch running completely immersed in an oil bath. Drive torque is continuously adjustable between 0 Nm and 62 Nm to comply with anti-crushing safety standards:

  • Access the internal clutch calibration screw beneath the ABS cover.
  • Adjust the mechanical transmission threshold directly using a standard hexagonal key.
  • Tighten to increase pushing force up to the 62 Nm ceiling; loosen to reduce transmitted linear force according to gate inertia.
  • Verify that the continuous oil-bath immersion remains topped with genuine FAAC OIL XD 220 for sustained thermal dissipation across intensive 70% duty cycle duty regimes (up to 70 cycles/hour).

Power Supply & Electrical Control Integration

The FAAC 844 R 3 PH electric motor absorbs 950 W with an operational draw of 2.5 A and requires a balanced 400 Vac three-phase power supply (+6% / -10%) at 50/60 Hz. The motor operates at 1,400 rpm.

The base operator does not house an integrated control board and must be wired to an external FAAC 844 T microprocessor-based three-phase control board. When wiring the system:

  • Main Motor Feed: Route three-phase wiring through power contactors capable of handling inductive loads up to 1.3 kW.
  • Electronic Braking: Ensure the 844 T electronic brake circuit is configured to overcome gate momentum on deceleration.
  • Accessory Power: Power peripheral safety devices via the 24 Vdc accessory output (rated up to 500 mA maximum).
  • Safety & Control Circuitry: Interconnect required terminal nodes including FOTOSWITCH safety photocells, CN 60 E mechanical or resistive safety edges, FAACLIGHT flashing indicators, T10 key selectors, PLUS 1 433 radio receiver cards, and junction boxes as indicated on the standard system layout.

Manual Override Operation

Because the internal gear architecture is irreversibly non-reversing, the gate mechanically locks in place upon closure without the addition of electric locks. In the event of a three-phase power failure, access the release mechanism via the integrated lever-operated release device using the supplied coded key to manually disengage the gear train and move the leaf freely by hand.
