Installation and Commissioning Guidelines for FAAC 844 C Z16 Sliding Gate Operator

Proper mechanical mounting, accurate rack alignment, and precise electrical calibration are critical when installing the FAAC 844 C Z16 electro-mechanical sliding gate operator (KT ERP reference KTI02006002844C). Engineered to manage heavy industrial, commercial, and high-traffic residential sliding or cantilever gates weighing up to 1800 kg and spanning up to 40 m, the 16.9 kg drive unit requires a level, vibration-free base to handle its maximum 1300 N thrust force and 9.6 m/min travel speed safely.

Foundation Anchoring and Base Preparation

The operator must be positioned parallel to the gate travel path on a solid concrete base. Secure the foundation plate using heavy-duty anchor bolts embedded in the concrete pad. Conduit pipes for main power and control cabling must enter through the dedicated access cutouts in the base plate before the operator is lowered into position. Ensure the foundation plate is level across both axes to eliminate tilt, which can cause lateral wear on the drive gear.

Pinion Engagement and Rack Alignment

The FAAC 844 C Z16 is fitted with an external Z16 Module 4 pinion. To ensure proper mechanical power transmission, align this drive gear with a compatible Module 4 steel or nylon toothed rack bolted or welded along the full length of the gate leaf. Critical mechanical guidelines include:

  • Backlash Clearance: Maintain a vertical mechanical clearance of approximately 1.5 mm to 2 mm between the teeth of the Z16 Module 4 pinion and the rack teeth. The gate leaf weight must never rest on the operator pinion or drive shaft.
  • Stroke Verification: Disengage the non-reversing transmission using the key-operated manual mechanical release lever. Manually slide the gate leaf along its entire travel path—up to the 40 m maximum width—to verify smooth, unhindered meshing without friction, tooth binding, or vertical misalignment.
  • Stopping Tolerance: Take into account the drive system's 30 mm stopping space when positioning physical travel stops at full open and full close limits.

Electrical Mains, Ingress Protection, and Control Wiring

The gearmotor operates on a single-phase 220–240 V AC supply at 50/60 Hz and draws a maximum power rating of 230 W, supported by an internal 18 µF start-up capacitor. All incoming conduit and cable entries must be sealed correctly to preserve the housing's IP44 environmental ingress protection rating against water spray and foreign matter. Connect the motor to compatible FAAC electronic control boards (such as the E781 or 780D series), utilizing BUS 2Easy ports, FAAC Simply Connect interfaces, safety edge terminals (NC or 8.2 kΩ), and FAAC XF SLH or FDS radio decoding modules.

Limit Switch Setup and Anti-Crushing Clutch Calibration

End-of-stroke detection relies on magnetic limit switch sensors mounted on the gearmotor chassis, activated by magnetic plates secured to the rack at the open and close terminal points. Adjust the position of the magnetic plates so that deceleration and full motor cut-off occur smoothly before the leaf strikes hard physical stops.

To guarantee compliance with EN 12453 safety requirements and European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, calibrate the internal twin-disk anti-crushing mechanical clutch, which runs inside the FAAC HP OIL bath. Rotate the internal clutch adjustment screw to set the exact slip threshold. The clutch must provide sufficient thrust to move the 1800 kg gate reliably under heavy site wind loading while slipping immediately to prevent crushing forces if an obstacle is encountered. The built-in thermal protection will automatically reset once internal temperatures drop below 120°C if the motor overheats during commissioning.
