Fog-Season Visibility: Reflective Jackets, Conspicuity Tape and Warning Triangles for Fleets and Night Crews

From November, dense fog settles over North India's highways, expressways and city roads, and visibility can drop to a few metres in the early morning. In fog, a truck, a road crew or a stranded driver is only safe if they can be seen in time. Retro-reflective materials bounce headlights straight back to the driver, so a trailer, a worker or a breakdown shows up long before the shape does. This guide covers KT India's fog-season visibility range: conspicuity tapes for vehicles, reflective jackets, cross belts and arm bands for people, and warning triangles for breakdowns. It explains which product suits which job, how to fit and use each one, and how to equip your fleet and crews before the fog arrives.

    Diamond Grade or standard tape?
For goods vehicles on highways, use the 3M Diamond Grade 983-326. Its microprismatic lenses return far more light than ordinary tape, and it meets AIS-090, the standard that Indian rules refer to for retro-reflective tapes on commercial vehicles. That keeps your fleet compliant at fitness checks and visible at long distance in fog. For vehicles that stay inside a plant, port or campus, and for fixed hazards like barriers, poles, dock edges and gates, the KTI 2 inch reflective tape is the economical choice.
How to apply conspicuity tape, step by step
    1. Clean the surface. Wash off mud and grease, wipe with a solvent such as isopropyl alcohol, and let it dry fully. Tape will not stick to a dusty or wet body.
    2. Plan the lines. Outline the rear: the bumper, the bottom edge and both rear corners up to the top. On the sides, run a line along the lower edge of the body.
    3. Apply in the dry, at normal temperature. Avoid cold early mornings; tape bonds best on a warm surface.
    4. Peel and press. Peel back a short length of liner at a time and press the tape down with a plastic squeegee, working from the centre outwards to push out air bubbles.
    5. Keep red and white in pattern. Do not stretch the tape, and keep the alternating blocks in sequence at joints.
    6. Clean it regularly. Mud-covered tape does not reflect. Make wiping the tape part of the daily vehicle check.

Reflective jackets and arm bands make road crews and their hand signals visible from far away.
    Visibility for people
Anyone who stands on or near a road in fog must be seen as a person, not a shadow. Give highway and toll crews the orange harness-pattern safety jacket, certified to IS 15809 and ISO 20471. For drivers, helpers and guards who need to keep one on all shift, the KTI elastic cross belt is light, adjustable and fits over a sweater or jacket. Add reflective arm bands for traffic marshals, because the arm is what signals the traffic. Keep a cross belt in every vehicle cabin so the driver puts it on before stepping out.
Using the warning triangle on a breakdown
    1. Get off the road. Move the vehicle as far to the left as possible and switch on the hazard lights.
    2. Be seen first. Put on your reflective cross belt before stepping out.
    3. Walk back facing traffic. Carry the folding warning triangle and place it well behind the vehicle, further back on highways and in fog, so approaching drivers have time to slow down.
    4. Stay off the carriageway. Wait behind the crash barrier or well off the road, not in or in front of the vehicle.
    5. Collect it last. Pick up the triangle only once the vehicle is ready to move.

    Frequently asked questions
Is reflective tape compulsory on trucks in India?
Goods vehicles are required to carry retro-reflective conspicuity tape that meets AIS-090. The 3M 983-326 is AIS-090 compliant.
How much tape does one truck need?
It depends on the body length. A 50 m roll of 3M tape, or a 45 m roll of KTI tape, usually covers the rear and both sides of a typical goods vehicle with some left over. Measure your body outline and tell us the fleet size in your enquiry.
Which is better, a full reflective jacket or a cross belt?
For crews working on the road, use the certified harness-pattern jacket. For drivers and guards who need something light to wear all shift, the elastic cross belt is ideal.
Where should the warning triangle go?
Well behind the vehicle on the same side of the road, further back on fast roads and in fog, so drivers see it in time to slow down.
