From late October the sun sets before 6 PM, festival nights run late, and every power cut leaves your boundary in the dark. A guard who cannot see the far corner of the wall is only guessing. The right light turns a night patrol into a proper check: a long-throw torch for the round, a searchlight on the watchtower, a revolving light on the patrol vehicle, and hands-free light for the technician fixing the fault. This guide covers KT India's searchlight and portable lighting range, which light suits which job, how to use each one, and how to equip your site.

    Handheld, tripod or vehicle?
Match the light to where the person stands. A guard on foot needs a rechargeable flashlight on the belt for every round, and a long-range handheld searchlight for long walls, open fields and water bodies. A guard in a fixed post, like a watchtower or gate roof, should have a tripod-mounted searchlight that sweeps the entire boundary from one spot. A patrol team covering kilometres of fence needs a vehicle-mounted revolving light. For the people who repair things at night, a headlamp and a rechargeable flood light keep both hands free.
How to run a searchlight patrol, step by step
    1. Charge before the shift. Put every torch, headlamp and flood light on charge in the day, and check the battery level at shift handover.
    2. Test at dusk. Switch on each light for a few seconds before it gets dark. A light that fails at 6 PM is better found than one that fails at 2 AM.
    3. Sweep in sections. On the tower, move the searchlight slowly from one end of the wall to the other, stopping on gates, corners, drains and trees. Lock it on any spot that needs watching.
    4. Light, then look. On foot, light up the space under vehicles, behind stacks and over the wall before walking to it.
    5. Keep the beam off faces. A 1,000-lumen beam dazzles. Point it at the ground in front of a person you are talking to, and away from road traffic.
    6. Log what you see. Note every gap in the fence, open door or broken light and report it at the end of the round.
    Vehicle-mounted searchlights
The revolving search light sits on the roof on its heavy magnetic base and plugs into the 12 V car connector, so there is no drilling and it moves between vehicles in a minute. From the passenger seat, the supervisor turns it 360 degrees and tilts it 90 degrees to light up fence lines, panel rows, stockpiles and roadsides up to 500 metres away. It is the fastest way to check a large solar farm, mine, plantation or highway stretch at night.
