FAAC C851 Sliding Gate Operator Installation & Commissioning Guide

Foundation Preparation and Operator Base Positioning

The FAAC C851 industrial sliding gate operator (part number 109903) requires a stable, level concrete foundation engineered to withstand dynamic thrust forces up to 3,000 N and operating torque up to 168 Nm. The physical dimensions of the gearmotor are 510 mm (L) x 295 mm (D) x 467 mm (H) with a total machine weight of 40 kg. To facilitate safe positioning on site, the operator chassis features integrated reinforcement side supports equipped with built-in handles, allowing installation teams to lift and locate the unit without applying stress to sensitive mechanical components.

Securing the operator to the foundation is executed via the heavy-duty galvanised steel operator base, which includes 5 dedicated fixing points. The base plate is engineered with integrated slot holes and height adjustment pins. These slots and leveling pins provide the technician with full horizontal and vertical alignment flexibility, ensuring exact leveling and smooth engagement relative to the gate structure before the final anchor fixings are torqued down.

Pinion and Rack Alignment

Mechanical power transfer is delivered through a factory-fitted Z28 pinion with a module 4 tooth geometry. The operator is designed to interface directly with standard module 4 toothed rack mounted along the sliding gate leaf, accommodating gate leaves up to 20 m in length and weights up to 1,800 kg. Utilizing the height adjustment pins on the galvanised steel base, align the pinion pitch line to achieve uniform tooth mesh along the entire travel distance, maintaining appropriate operational play to avoid resting gate leaf weight on the output drive shaft. Inside the operator housing, a dedicated plastic protection cover is fitted over the drive belt to protect technicians and prevent finger injuries during mechanical servicing.

Dual-System Limit Switch Configuration

The FAAC C851 integrates a hybrid end-of-travel detection system combining mechanical deceleration triggers with high-precision magnetic limit sensors:

  • End-of-Travel Run Positions: Two external magnetic limit switches are secured onto dedicated stainless steel plates installed directly along the module 4 rack. These magnetic sensors provide non-contact, precise cut-off signaling for both fully opened and fully closed gate positions.
  • Deceleration Zones: Two integrated mechanical limit switches equipped with fine adjustment screws manage gate deceleration. Technicians adjust these micro-metric screws to define the exact points where the drive initiates velocity reduction, safeguarding structural stops against dynamic impact.

Electrical Connections and E850S Inverter Commissioning

The incoming electrical service requires a 220-240V AC supply at 50/60 Hz. The incoming mains powers an internal 1.1 kW four-pole three-phase motor with a maximum absorbed power draw of 1,800 W. An integrated electric brake mounted on the motor shaft provides permanent irreversibility, locking the gate leaf mechanically in place when stopped.

The gearmotor houses an integrated FAAC E850S electronic control unit with an embedded frequency inverter. The inverter independently controls running speeds across opening and closing phases within an adjustable range of 20 to 40 m/min (up to 0.7 m/s). System programming is performed directly on the control board using the integrated display and pushbuttons. The control board is protected by dark and transparent plastic covers, enabling installers to inspect diagnostic parameters and view the display without exposing internal electronics to industrial site debris.

Manual Release and Enclosure Fitting

Once mechanical alignment, limit switch calibration, and electrical hookup are complete, verify the manual release mechanism. The manual release is accessible and operable directly from the outside of the operator, allowing manual leaf motion in power-loss scenarios without removing the housing. To conclude commissioning, fit the 1.5 mm steel protective cover, which features a zinc primer treatment and powder-coated paint finish. Secure the housing to maintain its IP54 environmental ingress rating across ambient working conditions ranging from -20°C to +55°C.
