Troubleshooting Guide for Sivananda UPMD 004 Four-Zone Metal Detector

The Sivananda UPMD 004 walk-through door frame metal detector operates via a continuous wave multi-zone microprocessor architecture. When operational anomalies, false triggers, or counting errors occur during security screening, facility technicians can resolve issues systematically using on-board diagnostics, keypad parameter menus, and physical calibration procedures.

System FAULT Indicator and Internal Diagnostics

The UPMD 004 incorporates an automated built-in self-test program designed to audit internal circuitry and processing modules continuously. If the dedicated system FAULT indicator illuminates on the control console, execute the following diagnostic checks:

  • Input Voltage Verification: Confirm that the primary AC mains line delivers 230 V AC (±10%) at 50 Hz. Severe voltage sags or surges exceeding the 10% operating tolerance disrupt continuous wave signal processing and can trip the internal fault monitor. Inspect the supplied mains cord for physical pinching or loose terminal seating. Note that while secondary DC backup cells (they are not included) may be utilized in external UPS configurations, the baseline detector relies strictly on clean AC mains distribution.
  • Re-initiating AUTO Calibration: Cycle the power supply to trigger the detector's automated power-up calibration routine. The AUTO Calibration function surveys ambient background electromagnetic signals to establish an updated operational baseline. Ensure that no moving metal targets or personnel pass through the 750 mm x 2000 mm passage opening during this power-up phase.

Resolving False Alarms and Interference

False positive alarms typically stem from ambient electromagnetic interference (EMI) or continuous mechanical vibration affecting the archway structure:

  • Independent Zone Sensitivity Calibration: The UPMD 004 provides digitally controlled sensitivity adjustable from 0 to 99 variable steps across 4 distinct detection zones. If false alarms trigger repeatedly in an isolated zone without the presence of metallic contraband, enter the keypad programming menu. Access the specific zone sensitivity setting on the display and step down the value incrementally from its current baseline until stationary background noise ceases to cross the threshold.
  • Structural Stability and Anchoring: Continuous movement or structural wobbling of the 75 kg Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) frame alters coil geometry relative to surrounding infrastructure. Confirm that all 4 supplied foundation nuts and bolts are tightened firmly to the floor within the 910 mm x 590 mm footprint to eliminate transit vibration.
  • Adjacent Metallic Masses: While the active detection area remains continuous—ensuring tossed metallic objects down to a 25 mm ferrous or non-ferrous cube cannot bypass the field—large external metal doors, gates, or electrical conduits vibrating within immediate proximity can cause inductive fluctuations. Re-adjust individual zone thresholds via the keypad to cancel out static metal structures.

Infrared Occupancy Sensor and Multi-Mode Counter Anomalies

Discrepancies in traffic tracking (IN, OUT, Total IN & OUT) or erroneous percentage alarm counts generally relate to the optical transit sensors:

  • Sensor Pathway Clearance: Inspect the integrated infrared occupancy sensors positioned along the internal passage side panels. Wipe dust or debris from the optical lenses using a clean, dry lint-free cloth.
  • Simultaneous Crossing Obstructions: The multi-mode counter relies on clear IR beam-break transitions. Inform transit personnel to maintain single-file passage through the 750 mm clear walk-through opening to avoid overlapping transit counts or miscalculated percentage alarm rates.
