Installation, Anchoring, and Initial Setup Guide

Site Selection and Structural Footprint Planning

Proper site layout ensures the Sivananda UPMD 004 4-zone door frame metal detector functions at peak sensitivity without false triggering. The unit requires a flat, structurally level floor area with minimum dimensions matching its exterior base footprint of 910 mm (W) x 590 mm (D), occupying approximately 0.52 sq. meters of floor space. Overhead clearance must comfortably accommodate the unit's total vertical height of 2170 mm, while pedestrian transit routes must align smoothly with the 750 mm (W) x 2000 mm (H) passage opening.

When selecting the installation position, screening choke points must be assessed for nearby electromagnetic interference (EMI) and adjacent moving or stationary metal structures. Large stationary ferrous objects, electrical switchgear, or heavy conduits positioned immediately adjacent to the side panels can distort the continuous wave electromagnetic field. If installation near structural metal cannot be avoided, independent sensitivity and threshold parameters must be configured for each of the 4 zones after anchoring.

Mechanical Assembly and Floor Anchoring

The UPMD 004 features a rigid Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (FRP) archway assembly with an approximate total weight of 75 kg. Given the unit's height and weight, assembly and upright positioning should be executed by two trained technicians to prevent mechanical stress on the FRP side panels and cross-assembly header.

  • Positioning: Place the upright archway assembly in the designated screening corridor, verifying that both vertical side columns are plumb and perpendicular to the floor.
  • Hardware Securing: Locate the pre-drilled base mounting points. The detector package is supplied with 4 heavy-duty foundation nuts and bolts specifically intended for mechanical floor anchoring.
  • Torque and Stability: Drill corresponding foundation holes into the concrete or solid subfloor, insert the anchoring bolts, and tighten the 4 foundation nuts securely. Firm floor bolting is required to prevent physical rocking, structural sway, or physical misalignment caused by heavy foot traffic or incidental contact.

Electrical Hookup and Mains Supply Specifications

The UPMD 004 operates directly from a standard AC utility feed. Route the supplied AC mains cord from the power entry point on the frame to a dedicated, grounded electrical outlet.

  • Input Voltage: 230 V AC ± 10%
  • Supply Frequency: 50 Hz
  • Auxiliary Supply Note: The UPMD 004 is powered via the included mains cord. If auxiliary external power packs or dry cells are adapted for offline backup power during facility power cuts, secondary battery cells (they are not included) must meet matching voltage specifications.
  • Data Cabling (Optional): If integrating with centralized security software or audit logging platforms, connect the communication lead from the microprocessor's PC-compatible interface to the local monitoring computer.

Commissioning, AUTO Calibration, and Zone Setup

Once mechanical anchoring and mains power connections are finalized, initiate system commissioning via the on-board controls:

  1. Power-Up and Self-Test: Switch on the main AC power. The internal microprocessor immediately initiates an automated built-in self-test routine. Verify that the dedicated system FAULT indicator remains clear, confirming operational internal circuitry.
  2. AUTO Calibration Routine: The unit executes an automated self-calibration (AUTO Calibration) upon power-up, measuring ambient environmental conditions to establish an operational electromagnetic baseline. Ensure no metal objects or personnel move through the 750 mm x 2000 mm passage during this routine.
  3. Keypad Sensitivity Programming: Using the built-in programming keypad and display, set individual zone sensitivity across 0 to 99 variable increments. Calibrate thresholds for all 4 detection zones independently to accommodate localized background metal interference.
  4. Optical Sensor Verification: Walk through the archway to verify the integrated infrared occupancy sensors. Check the digital display to confirm that transit directional counts (IN, OUT, Total IN & OUT) and percentage alarm counters increment correctly.
  5. Target Discrimination Check: Carry out physical test passes using a 25 mm ferrous and non-ferrous test cube at various elevations through each of the 4 vertical zones. Perform a toss test across the continuously active detection volume to confirm instantaneous alarm response.
