Proper surface preparation is mandatory to ensure maximum bonding performance of the Knuffi Type D surface protection bumper profile. The integrated light- and age-resistant modified acrylic adhesive backing requires a clean, completely dry, grease-free, and dust-free mounting surface. Contaminated, oily, flaking, or freezing substrates can compromise adhesive wetting and lead to premature bond failure.
Before mounting, thoroughly clean target flat surfaces using a residue-free degreasing agent or industrial cleaner. Allow the substrate to dry completely. The self-adhesive system is engineered to adhere to smooth and semi-smooth industrial substrates, including raw steel, painted sheet metal, sealed concrete, smooth wood, and composite cladding panels.
Step-by-Step Self-Adhesive Mounting Procedure
Knuffi Type D profiles feature a 50 mm wide by 20 mm thick flat-surface cross-section designed for fast peel-and-stick application without requiring specialized power tools.
- Measure and Align: Establish clear positioning guidelines along the wall, pillar, machine frame, or transit corridor using a chalk line or laser level to ensure linear alignment across long runs.
- Peel the Liner: Carefully peel back a section of the protective backing liner from the integrated modified acrylic adhesive strip, exposing the initial contact zone.
- Position and Press: Align the leading edge of the 50 mm profile against the reference line and press firmly onto the substrate. Progressively remove the backing liner while advancing along the run, applying continuous, uniform manual pressure down the center and edges of the profile to eliminate trapped air pockets and secure adhesive contact.
On-Site Trimming and Custom Sizing
Knuffi Type D profiles are supplied in standard 1 m linear sections, 5 m continuous rolls (shrink-wrapped in foil), and custom bulk rolls up to 50 m (supplied in cardboard packaging). The flexible, CFC-free polyurethane (PU) foam core and reverse-printed PU outer foil can be cut quickly on-site to exact project dimensions using a standard industrial utility knife.
When cutting, make a clean, square 90-degree cross-cut across the 50 mm x 20 mm profile to allow seamless butt-joining along extended transport routes, racking uprights, or wall perimeters. Butt joints should be pressed tightly together during installation to prevent dust or moisture ingress at seam points.
Alternative and Mechanical Mounting Options
While the integrated self-adhesive backing serves as the primary installation method for permanent indoor and outdoor applications, Knuffi Type D profiles are also compatible with Knuffi magnetic, removable, and mechanical wall-mount kit options where specified. These mounting alternatives enable non-permanent placement or mechanical anchoring on problematic, highly textured, or frequently reconfigured industrial surfaces.
Operational Environment and Deployment Placement
The profile's flexible polyurethane construction maintains structural integrity and impact absorption across a continuous operating temperature range of -40 °C to +100 °C (-40 °F to +212 °F). It is suitable for direct deployment in both indoor facility interiors and harsh outdoor industrial environments. Common placement zones include flat surface impact protection on columns, pillars, wall corridors, machinery housings, industrial shelving, racking systems, gates, and passageways where personnel head and body bump protection or transport vehicle deflection is required under standard ASR A1.3 safety marking layouts.
