Installation and Wiring Guidelines for Honeywell HM-RHSE

Base Mounting and Mechanical Installation

The Honeywell HM-RHSE intelligent rate-of-rise thermal detector is engineered for rapid field deployment using the standard Honeywell B501AP plug-in mounting base. Field installation utilizes a twist-to-lock mating mechanism that secures the detector head directly onto the pre-wired base. When fully seated in the B501AP base, the detector assembly features a diameter of 102 mm, an installed profile height of 61 mm, and a total combined net weight of 88 g (packed shipping weight is 0.12 kg). The exterior enclosure is manufactured from durable PC/ABS plastic finished in ivory.

To prevent unauthorized field detachment, vandalism, or accidental dislodgement in high-vibration industrial spaces, the assembly incorporates an integrated mechanical tamper-resistant locking tab. Once this locking feature is engaged during ceiling mounting, the detector head cannot be rotated or removed from the B501AP base without the intentional release of the tamper latch.

Loop Wiring and Electrical Termination

All analog addressable communication loop wiring terminates onto heavy-duty screw terminals located within the B501AP base prior to inserting the detector head. The terminal contacts accommodate field conductor sizes up to a maximum wire gauge of 2.5 mm². Utilizing the B501AP base introduces a minimal additional loop resistance of typically 20 mΩ (maximum 30 mΩ), which must be accounted for during fire alarm system loop resistance and voltage drop calculations.

The HM-RHSE operates across an addressable signaling line circuit (SLC) operating voltage range of 15 V DC to 32 V DC. At 24 V DC, maximum standby current consumption is 200 µA when loop communication is idle, and 300 µA when the panel initiates LED polling blinks once every 5 seconds. In an active alarm state, the LED current draw increases to 3.5 mA at 24 V DC. The device also provides dedicated auxiliary output terminals designed to drive an external remote LED indicator, supplying a remote output voltage of 22.5 V DC and a remote output current of 10.8 mA at 24 V DC.

Rotary Decade Address Configuration

Address assignment is achieved via dual decimal rotary decade address switches situated directly on the detector body. Before twisting the detector into the B501AP mounting base, commissioning engineers must manually set the unique loop address (01 to 99) using a standard screwdriver. This manual decimal addressing method avoids the need for specialized handheld programming tools or software-based soft addressing, eliminating field misconfigurations and allowing immediate verification of the device address on Honeywell Morley-IAS addressable fire alarm control panels.

Environmental Placement Criteria and Commissioning

The HM-RHSE is rated for operation across a wide thermal range of -30°C to +70°C and a non-condensing relative humidity envelope of 10% to 93%. However, because this model operates under Class A1R response parameters (triggering an alarm at a 10°C/minute rate of rise or upon reaching a fixed threshold of 58°C), it must never be installed in physical locations where the continuous normal ambient temperature exceeds 50°C. Installing the detector in spaces exceeding 50°C ambient heat will cause false alarm conditions or sensor degradation.

Post-installation verification is streamlined by two integral red LEDs that provide clear 360-degree visual indication of device status from any vantage point beneath the detector. Functional field testing during system handover can be performed using an external test magnet applied to the detector's built-in magnetic test switch, initiating an alarm condition and signaling the control panel without requiring artificial heat sources.
