Hydraulic Drive Unit and Fluid Management
The FAAC J355 HA M50 retractable bollard houses an internal electro-hydraulic drive unit with an IP67 environmental ingress protection rating. Because the hydraulic pump and drive cylinder are self-contained directly within the bollard assembly, there are no underground external pressurized hydraulic hoses. This design reduces hydraulic piping failure and fluid leakage risks across the perimeter security footprint.
Hydraulic fluid checks must be scheduled during standard preventive servicing. The system utilizes FAAC HP hydraulic oil with a total oil volume of 7 liters. Service engineers should inspect fluid levels, clarity, and consistency within the reservoir, verifying there are no contaminants or fluid degradation. Operating pressures should sustain the nominal 9,000 N maximum expressed thrust force to ensure full cycle performance, keeping the standard rising cycle at approximately 6 seconds and the descent cycle at 2 to 3 seconds (or approximately 2 seconds if the Emergency Fast Operation / EFO auxiliary circuit is installed).
Mechanical Structure, Guide Systems, and End-Stop Buffers
The 850 kg mechanical moving cylinder is constructed from S355JR EN 10210 heavy-gauge structural steel with a wall thickness of up to 30 mm, standing 1,200 mm above finished ground level with a 355 mm diameter. Maintenance procedures require inspecting the physical condition of the cylinder and surrounding foundation components:
- Surface Protection Inspection: Examine the cataphoresis anti-corrosion primer and dark grey metallised RAL 7021 polyester powder coating for chips, deep abrasions, or external chemical contamination.
- Stainless Steel Elements: Inspect the top cylinder head and ground crown, both constructed from AISI 304 stainless steel, wiping down surface deposits to maintain clean seating against the ground collar.
- Internal Structural Hardware: Verify the torque and structural integrity of the internal stainless steel fixing frame and fastening hardware securing the bollard mechanism inside the 235 kg foundation pit.
- Guide Carriages and Buffers: Inspect the internal guide carriages for smooth travel, check mechanical end-stop buffers for wear, and inspect the FAAC MX50-30BB limit switch regulation assembly to guarantee accurate stroke termination in both fully raised and fully retracted positions.
Electronic Controls, Signaling, and Pit Environment
Operation of the J355 HA M50 is managed through the FAAC JE275 electronic control board (part number 116300). During electrical inspections, verify input voltage stability at 220–240 V AC (50/60 Hz) and check terminal connections capable of supporting the 3,900 W (3.9 kW) peak power draw. Inspect motor run capacitors, auxiliary input/output relays, and inter-panel communication links if multiple bollards are synchronized in Master/Slave lane configurations.
Visual warning devices require regular operational checks. Inspect the integrated perimeter LED warning light ring set into the AISI 304 stainless steel top crown and clean the 55 mm white retro-reflective strip to ensure visibility. In installations deployed in cold climates down to -40 °C, test the operation of the optional JH275/J355 pit heater (part number 116203). Standard unheated installations must be operated within the -15 °C to +55 °C ambient threshold.
Drainage and Emergency Release Testing
Because the foundation pit (part number 116130) is cast into an excavation measuring approximately 3,100 mm in length, 1,600 mm in width, and 1,850 mm in depth, technicians must verify that the pit drainage system remains clear of silt, gravel, standing water, and road debris. While the drive mechanism is sealed to IP67, continuous standing water immersion must be prevented through routine gravel bed or sump pump clearing.
The bollard is designed to maintain an unyielding mechanical and hydraulic lock in the raised position during a primary mains electrical outage. Periodically test the FAAC J355 manual release kit (part number 116102) to verify that authorized personnel can manually bypass the hydraulic lock and lower the cylinder during emergency power-down procedures.
