System Compatibility and Anchorage Integration

The 3M Protecta FIRST Twin Leg Shock Absorbing Rope Lanyard 1390235 (3M ID 7100174076) is engineered to function as an integral connecting subsystem within a complete personal fall arrest system (PFAS). Safe and compliant operation requires pairing the lanyard with compatible fall arrest body support equipment, certified structural anchorages, and appropriate personal protective equipment designed for industrial applications such as wind energy facilities, scaffolding work, and construction structures.

Full-Body Harness Integration

The energy-absorbing tear pack end of the 1390235 twin-leg lanyard connects directly to the dorsal fall arrest attachment element of a personal fall arrest harness. System compatibility parameters include:

Harness Standard Compliance: Engineered to connect to full-body harnesses certified under standard EN 361.
Attachment Point: Must be connected specifically to the back (dorsal) fall arrest D-ring. It should not be attached to frontal work positioning rings, hip positioning points, or suspension loops unless authorized for certified fall arrest operations.
Harness Range Compatibility: Compatible across 3M and 3M PROTECTA full-body safety harnesses, including construction vest-style harnesses featuring pass-through buckle configurations and stamped zinc-plated steel hardware.
Subsystem Orientation: The tear-pack shock absorber end must remain connected directly to the user's dorsal harness ring to allow unobstructed deployment during a fall event, keeping the twin 12 mm polyamide twisted rope legs extended toward anchorage connections.

Structural Anchorage and Connector Interface

The lanyard terminates in two integrated scaffold hooks arranged in a twin-leg (forked) configuration. This mechanical setup is specifically intended for 100% continuous tie-off during horizontal and vertical movement across structural profiles.

Anchorage Types: Designed for direct engagement over compatible scaffold framework tubing, structural steel pipes, structural lattice members, and compliant structural anchorage points.
Hook Gate Operation: The two scaffold hooks require sufficient dimensional clearance on structural tubes to ensure complete gate closure and positive automatic locking. Anchoring over profiles that force gates open or impart side-loading forces on hook gates compromises safety integrity.
100% Tie-Off Discipline: While moving between positions, one scaffold hook must remain securely latched to an approved anchor point while the secondary hook is relocated to the subsequent anchor structure, maintaining uninterrupted fall arrest protection.
Clearance Requirements: System integration must account for the 2 m overall working length of the polyamide rope along with the full extension distance of the energy absorber upon deployment, preventing impact with lower obstructions or ground levels.

Industrial Equipment and Environmental Interoperability

The lanyard's construction utilizes a 12 mm twisted polyamide rope body, an integrated energy absorption pack, and a protected label cover that keeps regulatory markings intact across demanding industrial settings.

Installation, Harness Connection, and Rigging Guidelines

System Connection and Harness Integration

The 3M Protecta FIRST Twin Leg Shock Absorbing Rope Lanyard (Model 1390235, 3M ID 7100174076) functions as a connecting subsystem within a complete personal fall arrest system. Prior to connection, verify that the harness utilized is a compatible 3M or PROTECTA fall arrest full-body harness equipped with a designated dorsal (back) fall arrest D-ring compliant with EN 361 standards.

To install the lanyard onto the harness, connect the connector located at the tear-pack energy absorber end directly to the dorsal D-ring of the full-body harness. Ensure that the connector gate closes fully and the automatic locking mechanism engages completely. Never attach the shock absorber pack end to hip, side, or work-positioning D-rings, and never attach both legs to the harness simultaneously.

Anchorage Coupling and 100% Tie-Off Protocol

The 1390235 model features a twin-leg (double-leg / forked) configuration constructed from 12 mm polyamide twisted rope with an overall working length of 2 meters. This design enables continuous 100% tie-off when navigating structural frameworks, scaffold structures, and industrial assets such as wind energy installations.

Primary Anchorage Connection: Connect the first scaffold hook to a compatible, structural anchorage member or certified scaffold pipe overhead or at waist level. Verify that the scaffold hook gate snaps completely shut and locks automatically.
Transitioning Between Anchors: When moving across a structure, attach the second scaffold hook to the next structural anchor point before disconnecting the first scaffold hook. Maintain at least one scaffold hook securely anchored to the structure at all times.
Stowage of Unused Leg: When only one leg is tied off to an anchor point, never connect the free scaffold hook to non-breakaway structural points or work-positioning loops on the harness, as this can impede the proper deployment of the energy-absorbing pack during a fall event.

Pre-Installation and Pre-Use Inspection Checklist

Before every work shift, competent safety personnel and riggers must conduct a comprehensive physical and visual inspection of the lanyard assembly:

12 mm Polyamide Twisted Rope: Inspect the full 2-meter twin-leg rope lengths for signs of fraying, cut strands, abrasions, thermal burns, or chemical degradation.
Scaffold Hooks and Hardware: Check both scaffold hooks and the harness-end connector for mechanical deformation, cracks, gouges, or hardware corrosion. Confirm that gate mechanisms open smoothly and lock securely without binding.
Integrated Energy Absorber Pack: Inspect the tear-pack energy absorber to confirm that the outer casing is secure and that no stitch rupture or partial tear deployment has occurred.
Product Identification Labels: Verify that the covered identification labels remain intact, protected, and fully legible, documenting compliance with CE EN 355 and DOSH SIRIM standards. Note that this unit is not equipped with Connected Safety ID.

Immediate Removal from Service

The 3M Protecta FIRST 1390235 lanyard must be removed from service immediately and decommissioned if it has been subjected to the dynamic impact forces of a fall arrest, if the energy absorber stitching has deployed, or if the rope or metallic hardware fails any pre-use inspection parameter.

Maintenance, Inspection Protocols, and Service Life Guidelines

Routine maintenance, systematic inspection, and disciplined storage are vital to maintaining the structural integrity and operational readiness of the 3M Protecta FIRST Twin Leg Shock Absorbing Rope Lanyard 1390235 (3M ID 7100174076). Designed for fall arrest applications and 100% tie-off traversing in industrial environments such as wind energy, this lanyard depends directly on the sound mechanical condition of its 12 mm polyamide twisted rope, integrated energy absorber, and two scaffold hooks. Proper maintenance ensures compliance with EN 355 safety standards and DOSH SIRIM regulatory criteria.

Pre-Use Visual and Tactile Inspection Checklist

Before every work shift, the designated competent person or end user must perform a thorough physical and visual examination of the complete lanyard assembly. Any defect compromises personal safety and warrants immediate isolation from service:

Polyamide Rope Examination: Inspect the entire 2-meter length of the 12 mm polyamide twisted rope legs. Flex the rope along its length to detect internal fiber breakage, core stiffness, or localized thinning. Inspect closely for cuts, gouges, fraying, pulled strands, unlaying of the twist, abrasive wear, or heat fusion from hot work or thermal burns. Check for discoloration or hardening that may signal chemical contamination.
Energy Absorber Pack Integrity: Examine the integrated tear-pack shock absorber. The protective outer cover must be fully intact, closed, and undamaged. Check whether there is any evidence of partial or full deployment, ruptured tear webbing, or split stitching. If the shock pack cover is torn or the internal energy absorber has begun to tear out, the lanyard must be withdrawn immediately.
Connector and Scaffold Hook Operation: Inspect the two scaffold hooks and the harness-connection hardware. Ensure gates and locking mechanisms open smoothly and snap shut automatically without sticking, binding, or hesitation. Inspect hardware surfaces for cracks, sharp edges, burrs, mechanical distortion, bent shanks, or excessive corrosion.
Protected Identification Labels: The 1390235 lanyard features covered identification labels designed to stay readable throughout product life. Verify that the label cover is in place and that regulatory markings, CE EN 355 certification details, DOSH SIRIM marks, model number, batch numbers, and manufacturing dates remain legible. Note that this unit is not equipped with Connected Safety ID, so physical label inspection is necessary for asset tracking.

Immediate Retirement and Decommissioning Criteria

The 3M Protecta FIRST 1390235 lanyard must be permanently removed from service and tagged out under any of the following operational conditions:

The lanyard has arrested a fall or been subjected to fall arrest impact loading. Even if no external visual rupture is immediately obvious, an arrested fall strains the 12 mm polyamide rope and initiates deployment of the energy-absorbing tear pack.
The shock absorber exhibits any tearing, stitching failure, or deployment.
The 12 mm polyamide twisted rope exhibits deep abrasion, broken load-bearing strands, severed fibers, acid/chemical degradation, or heat fusion.
Either of the two scaffold hooks shows bent structural members, damaged rivets, cracked gates, failure of the automatic latching mechanism, or deep pitting corrosion.
The product identification labels are missing, altered, or unreadable, preventing verification of model identity, EN 355 certification, or traceability.

Cleaning and Storage Guidelines

Keep the lanyard clean to prevent abrasive dust and grit from penetrating between the twisted strands of the 12 mm polyamide rope:

Wipe down the rope and hardware surfaces using a clean cloth dampened with plain water or a mild neutral soap solution. Do not use harsh industrial solvents, strong detergents, bleaches, or acidic solutions, as these chemicals weaken synthetic polyamide fibers and corrode metallic gate mechanisms.
Allow the lanyard to air dry naturally in a well-ventilated space away from direct heat sources, open flames, or prolonged direct sunlight (ultraviolet exposure). Never force-dry using mechanical heaters or open flames.
Store the lanyard in a clean, dry, cool storage locker or tool crib free from environmental moisture, chemical vapors, sharp cutting tools, or oil spills. Store each unit individually to prevent twisted rope kinks or hardware impact damage.

Application Scenarios & Industry Use Cases

The 3M Protecta FIRST Twin Leg Shock Absorbing Rope Lanyard (model 1390235, 3M ID 7100174076) is an energy-absorbing fall arrest component engineered for elevated industrial work requiring full-time fall arrest protection. Built with a twin-leg configuration from 12 mm polyamide twisted rope and measuring 2 meters in length, the lanyard allows personnel to maintain continuous tie-off while transitioning between structural anchorages.

Continuous 100% Tie-Off Traversal

The primary use case for the 1390235 twin-leg lanyard is dynamic traverse across elevated work areas where fixed lifelines are unavailable. Personnel operating across elevated structural steel, pipe racks, or horizontal staging must maintain an uninterrupted tether to an approved anchorage point. By deploying two independent lanyard legs, the operative connects the first scaffold hook to a secure structural member before detaching the second scaffold hook from the previous anchor. This alternating attachment protocol eliminates the risk of an unanchored transition, maintaining 100% tie-off discipline.

Scaffold Erection, Modification, and Tube Steel Work

Equipped with two large-opening scaffold hooks, the lanyard is specifically configured for direct connection to standard scaffold framework, ledger pipes, and tubular structural assemblies. Scaffold builders and industrial maintenance teams working on temporary elevated platforms use these hooks for rapid docking and undocking directly onto scaffold tubing. The integrated shock pack remains positioned near the harness dorsal connection point, deploying to absorb kinetic energy and mitigate impact forces transferred to the worker's body if a fall occurs during platform assembly or planking operations.

Wind Energy Generation and Utility Operations

The 3M Protecta FIRST 1390235 is designated for use within the wind energy sector. Technicians servicing wind turbines frequently climb internal tower ladders, inspect exterior nacelle platforms, and carry out mechanical overhauls at height. The 2-meter working length provides the necessary radius of mobility around structural internal frames, nacelle enclosures, and tower platforms, while the heavy-duty 12 mm polyamide twisted rope construction delivers high tensile strength suitable for challenging turbine environments.

Full-Body Fall Arrest System Integration

The lanyard functions as the energy-absorbing connector in a personal fall arrest system. For proper operation, the pack end of the lanyard attaches directly to the dorsal (back) fall arrest D-ring of an EN 361 certified full-body harness, such as a 3M or PROTECTA fall arrest harness. The two scaffold hooks are then deployed to compatible overhead or structural anchorages certified to withstand arrest forces under CE EN 355 criteria and DOSH SIRIM regulatory approvals.
