Routine Cleaning and Decontamination Procedures
The 3M 7502 reusable half facepiece respirator features a fully demountable modular construction designed for thorough cleaning and sanitation between work shifts. Industrial hygiene programs complying with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134 and AS/NZS 1716:2012 require respirators to be cleaned after each operational shift to maintain protective performance.
Prior to cleaning, detach all bayonet-mounted particulate filters (such as the 3M 2000, 2200, or 7093 series) and gas/vapor chemical cartridges (such as the 3M 6001, 6003, or 6006 series). Disassemble the facepiece components: remove the head harness assembly, detach the inhalation valves, and inspect the exhalation valve assembly housed beneath the downward-directing polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) valve cover.
Wash the silicone rubber facepiece body and detached components by hand in warm water using a neutral cleaning detergent. The cleaning water temperature should remain within standard non-scalding limits to protect the elastomeric properties of the silicone. Never utilize solvent-based cleaning agents, volatile hydrocarbons, or abrasive scouring pads, as chemical solvents can degrade silicone seals and degrade PBT cartridge ports. Rinse all parts thoroughly in clean, warm running water to remove detergent residue, and allow them to air-dry in a contaminant-free atmosphere.
Pre-Use Inspection and Seal Checks
Before donning the 3M 7502 respirator, operators must perform a visual inspection of all structural components. Examine the silicone rubber face seal for cracking, cuts, distortion, or embedded foreign matter. Check the blue silicone inhalation and exhalation valves to ensure they seat flat against their valve seats without curling, tears, or debris accumulation.
Every wearer must conduct a positive and negative pressure user seal check prior to entering any hazardous atmosphere:
- Positive Pressure User Seal Check: Lightly place the palm of the hand over the downward-directing exhalation valve cover and exhale gently. The silicone facepiece should bow slightly outward without permitting any air to escape along the perimeter of the face seal.
- Negative Pressure User Seal Check: Cover the open filter inlets or cartridge faces with the palms of both hands and inhale gently. The facepiece should collapse slightly against the face and hold vacuum without inward leakage. If air leaks are detected, adjust the 4-point head cradle and strap tension, then retest. Note that facial hair or deep facial scars break the seal boundary and prevent an airtight fit.
Field Serviceable Replacement Parts
To reduce operating costs across manufacturing, chemical handling, and heavy industrial facilities, wear components of the 3M 7502 facepiece can be serviced using genuine replacement parts without discarding the main silicone body.

Filter Loading and Cartridge Change Schedules
The 3M 7502 facepiece provides an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 10 times the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) only when its filtration media is functioning properly. Particulate filters must be replaced immediately when physical damage occurs, excessive soil is observed, or breathing resistance increases significantly due to particulate cake loading.
Chemical cartridges used against organic vapors or acid gases must be replaced according to an established change-out schedule or service life software calculations. When installing new cartridges, align the cartridge connector notch with the bayonet mark on the PBT facepiece socket and rotate the cartridge clockwise one quarter turn until locked firmly in place.
Storage Instructions
Store cleaned and dried respirators away from direct sunlight, chemical vapors, extreme dust, and temperature extremes. When not deployed in drop-down mode or standard wearing mode, place the facepiece in a clean, sealed storage container or bag to prevent permanent deformation of the silicone face seal.
