Fitting Protocol and Ear Canal Insertion Guidelines for 3M 1110 Earplugs

Pre-Fitting Hygiene and Preparation

Achieving rated acoustic attenuation with the 3M 1110 corded earplug requires correct ear canal insertion and strict hygienic handling. Because earplugs are placed directly into the auditory canal, workers must ensure their hands are thoroughly clean and free from industrial grease, particulate debris, cutting fluids, or solvents prior to handling. The 3M 1110 features an orange, slow-recovery polyurethane foam body with a smooth, dirt-resistant exterior designed to minimize soil accumulation during rolling.

Step-by-Step Roll-Down and Insertion Procedure

Proper compression and depth of placement determine whether the user achieves the full certified acoustic seal (NRR 29 dB, SNR 35 dB) or experiences acoustic leakage. Follow this standard industrial fitting sequence:

  • Roll and Compress: Place the orange tapered foam tip between the thumb and fingers. Slowly roll and gradually increase downward pressure to compress the slow-recovery polyurethane foam into a very thin, narrow, crease-free cylinder. Ensure no sharp ridges or folds form along the compressed foam surface.
  • Straighten the Ear Canal: Reach over the top of the head using the opposite hand and pull the outer ear (pinna) firmly upward and outward. This mechanical motion straightens the natural bend of the ear canal, opening a direct path for deep insertion.
  • Insert and Seat: While maintaining ear traction, immediately slide the compressed foam tip well into the ear canal. The tapered bullet shape guides entry into nominal ear canal sizes ranging from 6 mm to 13 mm.
  • Hold During Expansion: Hold the earplug gently in place with your fingertip for several seconds while the slow-recovery polyurethane foam expands to fill and seal the internal contours of the auditory canal.

Acoustic Fit Verification and Fit Testing

A tactile and visual fit check must be performed immediately after the foam completes its recovery expansion. Touch the outer opening of the ear canal: you should feel only the small trailing end of the earplug base protruding. If a substantial portion of the earplug body extends outside the ear canal opening, the earplug is seated too shallowly. A shallow fit drastically reduces attenuation below rated laboratory levels (such as H=33 dB, M=33 dB, L=31 dB). If seated improperly, completely remove the earplug, ensure hands remain clean, and re-roll from the first step.

For operations conducting formal hearing conservation compliance, the 3M 1110 is fully test-compatible with the 3M E-A-Rfit Dual-Ear Validation System. This system allows health and safety officers to quantitatively measure individual personal attenuation ratings (PAR) across both ears simultaneously, confirming workers obtain adequate protection in high-noise zones up to 100 dBA TWA.

PPE Integration and Cord Management

Because the 3M 1110 is an in-ear protective device with a low-profile fit, it integrates seamlessly with complementary personal protective equipment. Workers can wear hard hats, safety spectacles, protective goggles, welding shields, and face visors without breaking the acoustic seal or creating painful pressure points. The integrated red polyester cloth cord rests comfortably behind the neck, keeping both plugs paired and preventing them from falling onto contaminated surfaces during brief work pauses. Note that 3M 1110 earplugs are strictly disposable single-use hearing protectors; they cannot be washed, laundered, or reused once soiled.
