Diwali Office Cleanup Done Right: Choosing a Paper Shredder for DPDP-Era Record Disposal

    28/10/2026

Diwali safai is when Indian offices finally empty the almirahs: old salary sheets, KYC copies, bank statements, customer forms and HR files all come out at once. Most of it ends up with the raddiwala in one piece, which means names, PAN and Aadhaar numbers, account details and signatures leave the building readable. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, organisations are expected to protect personal data with reasonable security safeguards and erase it when it is no longer needed. A cross-cut shredder handles the paper side of that in minutes. This guide covers KT India's paper shredder range, which model suits which office, how to use and look after it, and how to plan this year's cleanup.

    Which shredder for which office?
Start with how much paper goes through it in a day. A personal desk or small cabin that shreds a few sheets at a time is well served by the Easy Cut 822 or the Shred Master X308. A shared office or records room that shreds every day needs the Easy Cut 872, with its 29 litre bin and an hour of continuous running. If staff have whole files to clear, the Shred Master 50X saves the most time: load up to 50 sheets, close the lid and walk away. Next, pick the security level. P-3 confetti suits general office paper, and P-4 is the better choice for HR, salary, medical and customer records.
How to run a safe Diwali shredding drive, step by step
    1. Check what you must keep. Confirm retention periods with accounts and legal first. Tax, GST and company records have fixed retention periods, so shred only what is past them.
    2. Sort into three piles. Keep, shred and recycle. Anything with a name, ID number, account number, signature or salary goes in the shred pile.
    3. Remove binders and big clips. The Easy Cut 872 takes staples and small clips, but plastic binders, bulldog clips and spiral bindings should come off first.
    4. Feed within capacity. Feed up to the rated sheet count, straight into the slot. If it jams, use reverse, take out a few sheets and feed again.
    5. Respect the duty cycle. Personal shredders need rest periods. The 822 runs 1.5 minutes on and 30 off; the 872 runs 60 minutes on and 45 off. For big drives, plan two machines or use the auto-feed 50X.
    6. Empty and recycle. Empty the bin before it is full, bag the confetti and send it for recycling. Cross-cut confetti cannot be pieced back together like strip-cut paper.

A compact shredder beside each desk means sensitive printouts never reach the dustbin.
    Keep your shredder running
Oil the cutters with shredder oil every time you empty the bin, or after about every 30 minutes of shredding. Simply run a few drops along an A4 sheet and feed it through. Keep the bin from overfilling, because a packed bin makes the motor work harder. Don't feed glossy brochures, laminated sheets, cloth or adhesive labels. Feed credit cards only on models built for them, such as the 50X and 872, and CDs only through the separate CD slot on the 822.

Build a shredding setup for your organisation
    • Home office, CA, lawyer or doctor's clinic: one Easy Cut 822 beside the main desk.
    • Small office or branch with 10 to 25 staff: a Shred Master X308 at reception and an Easy Cut 872 near the printer.
    • Corporate HR, accounts and admin: a Shred Master 50X in each department that handles personal data, plus an 872 in the records room.
    • Banks, NBFCs, insurers, hospitals and schools: a P-4 shredder on every floor that handles customer, patient or student records, and a written shredding routine that runs every month, not only at Diwali.
    Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between strip cut and cross cut?
Strip cut slices paper into long strips that can be pieced back together. Cross cut, which all four KT India models use, cuts it into small confetti pieces that cannot realistically be reassembled.
What do P-3 and P-4 mean?
They are security levels for shredded paper. P-3 suits general office documents; P-4 gives smaller pieces for confidential and personal data. The Shred Master 50X is P-4 and the X308 is P-3.
Do I have to remove staples?
Not on the Easy Cut 872, which shreds staples and small paper clips. On other models, removing them extends cutter life.
Can a shredder handle a full Diwali cleanup?
Yes, if you size it right. An auto-feed 50X or a high-duty 872 handles a day of files; small personal models need rest breaks.
