The KTI Stair Nosing ASN4523 (SKU: KTI16007002SN45) is engineered for step-edge protection, acoustic noise dampening, and clear tread edge definition across industrial, commercial, institutional, and multi-story residential properties. Correct site preparation and profile mounting ensure durable edge reinforcement and long-term performance across heavy footfall staircases.

Pre-Installation Inspection and Substrate Preparation

Before installing the ASN4523 aluminium profile, thoroughly inspect the staircase treads and risers. The structural edge of each step must be structurally sound, dry, flat, and free of dirt, grease, loose debris, or previous coating residues. Uneven step edges should be leveled to guarantee consistent surface contact across both the 45 mm tread face and the 23 mm riser drop.

  • Concrete & Stone: Ensure the porous surface is clean, fully cured, and cleared of loose aggregate or masonry dust.
  • Marble & Ceramic Tile: Degrease polished surfaces using a neutral cleaner and verify that the tile edge is firmly bonded to the base substrate.
  • Wood: Verify that wooden stair treads are securely fastened, level, and free of protruding nails, screws, or surface splinters.

Profile Sizing and Cutting

KTI ASN4523 stair nosings are supplied in standard lengths of 10 ft (approx. 3.05 m / 3 m). To tailor the profiles to individual staircase dimensions:

  • Measure each stair step individually along the tread-to-riser junction, as step widths across concrete or tiled stairwells may vary slightly.
  • Mark the cut line accurately across the 45 mm x 23 mm L-shaped profile.
  • Cut the profile to length using a standard aluminium metal cutting saw or mitre saw fitted with a non-ferrous carbide blade.
  • Deburr cut edges cleanly to remove sharp metal shavings before positioning the nosing onto the step edge.

Mounting and Fixing Techniques

The L-shape design of the KTI ASN4523 accommodates multiple installation techniques depending on the staircase substrate and traffic load requirements:

Adhesive Pasting / Self-Adhesive Mounting: For seamless step transitions on marble, tile, and finished stone where drilling is not preferred, apply a high-strength construction adhesive along the internal angle of the 45 mm tread and 23 mm drop. Press the profile firmly over the step junction to ensure even adhesive distribution and eliminate void spaces that cause step impact noise. Allow the adhesive to cure completely before opening the staircase to pedestrian traffic.

Mechanical Fixing: For heavy-duty concrete, masonry, or timber installations, pre-drill counterbored pilot holes through the aluminium tread section. Align the nosing flush against the step edge, mark drilling positions onto the substrate, insert suitable masonry plugs or anchors, and secure the profile with countersunk mechanical fasteners.

Post-Installation Care and Maintenance

The anodized surface treatment—available in Matt Silver, Blackmat Anodized, Champagne, and optional Gloss Chrome—provides high resistance to corrosion, wear, and scratching. Clean the installed profiles periodically using a damp cloth and a mild neutral detergent. Do not use abrasive pads, wire brushes, or strong acid/alkali chemicals, as harsh cleaners can degrade the protective anodized layer.
