Surface-Mount Installation and Adhesive Bonding Guide for 3M Series 290 Road Studs

Surface Mounting Overview & Pavement Compatibility

The 3M Raised Pavement Marker Series 290 (Ref: KTI160260023MYY_WHITE_-_WHITE_REFLECTOR) features a shankless, flat-bottom profile measuring 100 mm (L) x 90 mm (W) x 18 mm (H) with a unit weight of 100 g. Designed for surface-applied installation, it eliminates the need for roadway core drilling or asphalt slot cutting. This marker is engineered for direct bonding to both bituminous asphalt and Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement surfaces across highways, expressways, median divisions, pedestrian crossing approaches, and commercial facility roadways.

Pavement Surface Preparation

Proper surface preparation is mandatory to ensure long-term structural adhesion and prevent premature dislodgement under high-volume vehicular impact. Installers must adhere to the following site preparation steps before applying bonding agents:

  • Cleanliness: Mechanically sweep, wire-brush, or blast the pavement with compressed air to eliminate loose aggregate, road grime, curing compounds, and chemical residue.
  • Moisture & Contaminants: The application substrate must be completely dry and sound. Never install markers over damp surfaces, standing water, heavy oil deposits, or actively crumbling asphalt.
  • Thermal Considerations: Verify that pavement and ambient temperatures comply with the adhesive manufacturer's minimum application thresholds before dispensing bonding compounds.

Approved Adhesive Types and Dispensing

The flat underside of the 3M 290 engineered thermoplastic body is chemically compatible with standard highway-grade adhesives. Installation teams typically utilize two primary bonding systems:

  • Hot-Pour Bitumen Adhesive: Melted and applied at recommended operational temperatures using a dedicated marker applicator. Provides rapid curing and immediate traffic turnaround on asphalt roadways.
  • Two-Part Epoxy Pavement Marker Adhesive: Metered and mixed in equal ratios for high-tensile bonding on both aged asphalt and Portland cement concrete substrates.

Placement Procedure and Perimeter Sealing

Dispense an adequate puddle of adhesive onto the prepared pavement target zone. Using the molded ergonomic finger grips situated on the marker's side edges, position the marker firmly onto the adhesive bed.

Press the marker downward with uniform hand pressure until the adhesive displaces evenly outward. A continuous, uniform bead of adhesive must squeeze out around all four exterior perimeter edges. This edge squeeze-out confirms 100% bottom surface contact, fills localized surface voids, and creates a protective perimeter barrier that shields the bond line against road wash and water ingress.

Optical Orientation and Line Alignment

Because this model features bidirectional (two-way) white Diamond Grade full-cube microprismatic retroreflective lenses, align the reflective faces perpendicular to the direction of oncoming traffic flow. Ensure the marker is aligned with center lines, lane separation lines, or gore markings in accordance with Indian Roads Congress (IRC) delineation standards, ASTM D4280, and EN 1463-1/2 specifications before the adhesive reaches its initial set.
