Circuit Protection and Overload Reset Procedure

The Ahuja SSA-250M public address amplifier incorporates an integrated rear-panel resettable thermal/magnetic circuit breaker designed to protect internal amplification stages from short circuits and severe load overshoots. Unlike traditional fuse-based architectures, this circuit protection mechanism eliminates the necessity for internal glass fuse replacement during standard operational faults.

If the amplifier shuts off output during operation due to thermal or electrical stress, technicians should immediately power off the unit at the main switch, isolate the speaker load lines, and inspect the rear panel. Allow the amplifier to cool down if thermal cut-off has occurred. Once the external fault or line short is cleared, press the rear-panel circuit breaker button firmly inward to restore electrical conductivity before repowering the system.

Acoustic Driver Protection and Switch Configuration

To prevent mechanical strain and diaphragm blowout on horn compression drivers, the rear panel features a dedicated Box Speaker / Driver Unit selector switch. Periodic verification of this physical switch setting is an essential operational maintenance task:

  • Driver Unit Mode: Select this position whenever the SSA-250M is connected to horn drivers. This setting automatically defeats the low-frequency bass boost (which delivers up to ±6dB equalization at 100Hz), attenuating destructive low-frequency excursions.
  • Box Speaker Mode: Use this position only when full-range acoustic wooden or plastic loudspeaker enclosures are wired to the terminal barrier strip.

Load Impedance and Distribution Line Verification

System stability requires routine impedance and load capacity audits across all connected speaker networks. When using the 70V or 100V line distribution outputs, calculate the sum of all transformer primary taps to ensure total demand does not exceed the 250W RMS continuous capacity of the amplifier. Overloading the line transformer array will cause distortion beyond acceptable total harmonic distortion (THD) limits (2% at 200W RMS, 5% at 220W RMS, 10% at 250W RMS) and trigger the circuit breaker.

For low-impedance configurations across the 4Ω or 8Ω rear screw terminals, use an audio impedance meter to confirm that the net load is matched and never drops below the 4Ω minimum threshold. Operating below 4Ω presents a virtual short-circuit condition to the output stage.

Power Supply and DC Backup Inspection

The SSA-250M operates on dual power topologies: standard 220–240V AC 50/60Hz mains (drawing 460VA to 500VA) and an external 24V DC battery supply consuming up to 6A. The amplifier includes an automatic, instantaneous changeover circuit that switches to 24V DC battery backup (using two 12V car batteries (they are not included)) in the event of AC utility power interruption.

The steel metal housing measures 450 mm (W) × 160 mm (H) × 340 mm (D) with a chassis weight of 16.0 kg. Keep the ventilation louvers clear of dust, industrial particulates, and obstructions to maintain natural convective heat dissipation across internal power transistors.

Regularly inspect front-panel rotary potentiometers controlling the 6 Microphone, 2 Auxiliary, 1 Line, Master, Bass, and Treble (±6dB at 100Hz and 10kHz) stages. Clean potentiometer tracks using dry, non-conductive electrical contact cleaner if rotary adjustments exhibit audible noise or intermittent level drops.
