Rechargeable Ni-MH Battery Charging Protocol
The Pelican 9415i LED Lantern operates on a 4.8V rechargeable pack configured from 4 C-size NiMH batteries (they are not included). To maintain full capacity across industrial shifts, field teams must observe a complete 15-hour charge time cycle. Routine charging cycles restore peak performance for the lantern’s 4 LEDs, which provide 392 lumens (32,767 candela, 392-meter beam) on High mode and 144 lumens (13,747 candela, 234-meter beam) on Low mode.
Operational status is tracked via an integrated RGB LED battery level indicator. The RGB LED indicator illuminates to communicate remaining power reserves during use and provides active status updates during the charging sequence. When operating in hazardous industrial environments, operators should verify the RGB LED indicator prior to deployment to ensure sufficient operational run time (up to 4 hours 30 minutes on High mode and up to 11 hours 0 minutes on Low mode).
Charging Station and Hardware Servicing
Fleet charging infrastructure must be kept clean and debris-free to ensure reliable power transmission. The 9415i lantern charges via the Pelican 9416 Deck/Dash Charger Base Unit, which integrates with the Pelican 6057F 110V Transformer (USA), the Pelican 8056F 12V Plug-in for Fast Charger, or the Pelican 6061F Direct Wiring Rig for Fast Charger.
- Inspect the charging contacts on the lantern housing and the 9416 charger base unit monthly for particulate accumulation or oil residue.
- Clean electrical contacts using a dry, lint-free cloth. Do not apply hydrocarbon solvents, abrasive cleaners, or conductive liquids to charging contact surfaces.
- Ensure the vehicle dash or equipment deck mounting for the 9416 charger base unit remains firmly tightened in mobile plant applications.
Battery Pack Replacement (Pelican 9418Z0)
If runtime degrades below operational standards, the internal cell array can be replaced using the Pelican 9418Z0 Replacement Battery pack, which houses replacement Ni-MH batteries (they are not included). Because the Pelican 9415i is certified for ATEX Zone 0, IECEx ia, and InMetro hazardous locations, battery compartment servicing must be executed strictly within non-hazardous, gas-free zones.
Before opening the casing, ensure the top-mounted push-button switch is in the off position. Disconnect any charging base units or transformers. After installing the 9418Z0 pack containing replacement C-size batteries (they are not included), confirm that wiring connectors are secure and that the internal chassis aligns without pinching lead wires.
EPDM O-Ring Inspection and IPX4 Ingress Integrity
The Pelican 9415i features an IPX4 water resistance rating tested to ANSI/PLATO FL 1 standards. Liquid ingress resistance depends on the condition of the elastomeric seal:
- Inspect the internal EPDM O-ring whenever the casing is opened for battery replacement or internal checks.
- Check the EPDM O-ring for cuts, flattening, micro-cracks, contamination, or displacement from its seating channel.
- Wipe away particulate matter from the O-ring and sealing surfaces using a clean, dry wipe; replace damaged EPDM seals immediately to maintain environmental sealing.
- Ensure the sealing perimeter is properly seated prior to retightening the housing fasteners.
Housing and Anti-Static Lens Cleaning
The 9415i lantern casing and shroud are molded from anti-static impact modified PC/PBT in High Visibility Yellow, paired with an anti-static coated polycarbonate (PC) lens. Maintaining the anti-static properties of these components is essential to prevent electrostatic build-up in volatile work areas.
Clean the anti-static impact modified PC/PBT body, shroud, top-mounted push-button switch, and anti-static coated polycarbonate lens using a soft cloth dampened with clean water and mild soap. Never use acetone, industrial degreasers, or abrasive cleaning compounds, as they degrade the anti-static surface treatments, cloud the optical lens, and compromise hazardous location compliance.
