Honeywell YJ4600 Installation and Host Integration Guide

Integrating the Honeywell YJ4600 2D area-imaging scanner into industrial terminals, point of sale (POS) stations, or automated data capture workflows involves establishing physical interface connectivity, verifying electrical supply limits, configuring host communication parameters, and positioning the unit for target read distances.

Host System Interface and Cabling

The Honeywell YJ4600 supports corded data communication via USB and Keyboard Wedge (KBW) interfaces. Before connecting the interface cable, ensure the host system terminal, PC, or controller is powered down or operating in a stable state suitable for peripheral installation.

  • USB Host Connection: Connect the dedicated interface cable into an active USB port on the host terminal. The device draws operating power directly from the host bus. Verify that the bus provides the required 4 V DC to 5.5 V DC regulated input.
  • Keyboard Wedge (KBW) Connection: In KBW implementations, interface the scanner between the host terminal and the external keyboard using the designated Y-cable adapter configuration to ensure serial keystroke transmission.

Electrical Parameters and Power Planning

System designers must account for electrical ratings when sizing centralized industrial USB hubs or shared power buses. The YJ4600 complies with Class 2 DC power requirements (rated 5.2 V DC). The electrical load profiles must adhere to the following specifications:

  • Input Voltage Range: 4 V DC to 5.5 V DC
  • Operating Current Load: 400 mA typical at 5 V DC (2 W power consumption)
  • Standby Current Load: 90 mA typical at 5 V DC (0.45 W power consumption)

Operating Modes and Scanning Configuration

The YJ4600 provides operational flexibility across workflows through two primary scanning modes:

  • Manual Handheld Trigger Mode: Operated as a manual handheld unit where decoding activates via the integrated mechanical trigger switch. The physical envelope measures 170 mm in length, 66 mm in width, and 85 mm in height, with a lightweight net mass of 120 g to minimize user fatigue.
  • Hands-Free Presentation Mode: Configured on an optional countertop stand for automated data capture. In presentation mode, internal automatic object detection triggers the white LED illumination and 617 nm red LED aiming sight whenever a barcode label or electronic screen enters the scanning field.

Optical Alignment and Working Distance Tolerances

Proper physical positioning relative to conveyed goods, ticketing wickets, or operator presentation areas requires maintaining the target barcode within rated depth-of-field envelopes and scanning angles. The optical engine accommodates wide angular variations: pitch of ±70°, tilt of ±60°, and rotational alignment of ±180°. A minimum print contrast of 35% reflectance difference is required for valid decode confirmation.

Symbology / Resolution Operational Depth of Field (Read Range)
5 mil Code 39 33 mm to 95 mm
13 mil UPC-A 32 mm to 255 mm
20 mil Code 39 35 mm to 355 mm
6.7 mil PDF417 30 mm to 95 mm
10 mil Data Matrix 30 mm to 100 mm
15 mil Data Matrix 21 mm to 162 mm
20 mil QR Code 23 mm to 200 mm

Commissioning Verification and Environmental Parameters

During initial installation and line commissioning, confirm correct decoder feedback via the top-mounted visual indicator: a green light signifies a successful decode, whereas a red light indicates an incomplete or failed reading cycle. Ensure environmental operating temperatures remain between 0°C and 40°C with non-condensing relative humidity within 5% to 95%. Ambient illumination at the installation site can range safely from total darkness up to 100,000 Lux without degrading sensor acquisition.
