Honeywell North 54001 Installation, Donning & Seal Check Guide

Proper assembly, donning, and fit verification of the Honeywell North 54001 (5400 Series) Medium/Large full facepiece respirator are critical steps to achieving certified industrial respiratory protection. Designed with a soft thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) structure and dual mechanical ports, the unit requires precise mounting of filter media and correct harness adjustment to ensure a reliable seal.

1. Pre-Use Inspection & Cartridge Installation

Prior to assembly, inspect the black TPE facepiece body, 4-point suspension harness, inhalation valves, and exhalation flapper valves for tears, warping, debris, or chemical degradation.

  • Align Cartridges/Filters: Align the threads of approved Honeywell North N-Series gas/vapor cartridges, particulate filters, or combination cartridges with the dual mechanical threaded ports on the facepiece.
  • Hand-Tighten Securely: Thread each cartridge clockwise until the internal silicone sealing gasket firmly seats against the connector face. Do not cross-thread or over-tighten, as excessive mechanical torque can damage the threads or deform the sealing gasket.
  • Protective Covers: If operating in spray finishing or heavy particulate environments, apply compatible peel-away lens covers directly over the ANSI Z87.1-rated polycarbonate visor to guard against surface contamination.

2. Step-by-Step Donning Sequence

The 4-point elastomeric harness must be adjusted methodically to distribute pressure evenly around the perimeter of the face without distorting the pliable TPE seal.

  • Step 1 – Loosen Straps: Fully extend and loosen all four harness adjustment straps before placing the unit over the head.
  • Step 2 – Chin Placement: Cup the base of the respirator beneath the chin, seating the chin securely inside the integrated lower chin cup pocket.
  • Step 3 – Harness Position: Pull the 4-point harness over the crown of the head, centering the harness pad squarely on the back of the skull.
  • Step 4 – Lower Strap Tensioning: Pull the two lower neck straps straight back toward the rear of the head until snug.
  • Step 5 – Upper Strap Tensioning: Pull the two upper forehead straps evenly to secure the top half of the facepiece against the brow.
  • Step 6 – Oral/Nasal Cup Check: Verify that the internal oral/nasal cup rests comfortably around the bridge of the nose and mouth to maintain proper internal airflow and prevent visor fogging.

3. Pre-Entry User Seal Checks

A user seal check must be performed immediately after donning and before entering any hazardous or contaminated atmosphere.

Check TypeExecution ProcedureAcceptance Criteria
Negative Pressure CheckCover the open inlet surfaces of both N-Series cartridges/filters with the palms of the hands. Inhale gently and hold breath for 5 to 10 seconds. The facepiece should collapse slightly inward toward the face and remain collapsed with no air leakage detected along the elastomeric seal perimeter.
Positive Pressure CheckCover the central exhalation valve guard opening with the palm of the hand. Exhale gently into the facepiece.A slight positive internal pressure should build up within the facepiece without any air escaping outward past the face seal boundary.

4. Configuration with Advanced Systems & Prescription Eyewear

When transitioning the Honeywell North 54001 from standard Air-Purifying Respirator (APR) mode (Assigned Protection Factor: 50) to Powered Air-Purifying (PAPR) or Continuous Flow Supplied Air Respirator (CF-SAR) modes (Assigned Protection Factor: 1000), connect the respective breathing tubes directly to the facepiece inlet ports according to the manufacturer conversion kit instructions.

Standard corrective eyeglasses cannot be worn under the facepiece because temple bars break the perimeter seal. Fitment must be achieved using the compatible Honeywell prescription spectacle kit (Part # 80100 or 760024) mounted inside the visor assembly. Ensure all facial hair that crosses the elastomeric sealing edge is removed prior to operation.
