Installation and Wiring Guidelines

Proper field installation of the GST DC-9102(IS) intrinsically safe conventional photoelectric smoke detector (Product No. 10105034) requires strict compliance with hazardous area electrical standards and manufacturer wiring parameters. The unit is designed for deployment in Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous locations across chemical plants, petroleum refineries, and marine vessels requiring explosion-proof protection rated to Ex ib IIC T6 Gb (Certificate CE16.2158).

Mounting Base Compatibility and Mechanical Setup

The detector head mounts onto the dedicated GST DB-01(IS) detector base (Product No. 30205765). Mechanical fixing supports standard electrical back boxes and surface mounts with a mounting hole distance ranging from 45 mm to 75 mm. The combined assembly of the ABS plastic enclosure and base presents a diameter of 100 mm, an overall height of 54.5 mm, and an approximate total weight of 110 g. Ensure the detector base is secured firmly to the ceiling surface before routing cables and terminating conductors.

Base Wiring and Terminal Connections

Wiring terminations must be executed cleanly at the DB-01(IS) base terminals to maintain circuit integrity across the non-addressable conventional detection zone:

  • Terminal 1: Detection zone positive IN (+ Loop Input)
  • Terminal 2: Detection zone positive OUT (+ Loop Output to subsequent detectors or end-of-line component)
  • Terminal 3: Detection zone negative IN and OUT (− Common Loop Return)
  • Terminal 4: Physical fix only (no electrical circuit connection)

Cable Specifications and Distributed Parameter Limits

Field cabling must use fire-rated cables with a cross-sectional conductor area of 1.0 mm² or larger. In compliance with hazardous area regulations and local electrical codes, conductors should be routed through grounded metal conduit or flame-retardant conduit. To preserve intrinsic safety compliance, the total distributed line characteristics must remain strictly within specified design limits:

Circuit ParameterMaximum Permissible Value
Distributed Line Capacitance≤ 0.083 μF
Distributed Line Inductance≤ 4.1 mH
Recommended Conductor Cross-Section≥ 1.0 mm² fire-rated cable
Operating Nominal Voltage24 VDC (operational window 16 VDC to 28 VDC)

Safety Barrier and Zone Monitor Integration

The DC-9102(IS) must operate through an intrinsically safe Zener barrier positioned between the hazardous area zone and the non-hazardous control equipment. The safety barrier must comply with the following maximum entity ratings: Uo = 28 V, Io = 93 mA, Co = 0.083 μF, Lo = 4 mH, and Po = 651 mW. When integrating hazardous conventional zones into intelligent addressable systems, connect the zone loop via the compatible GST I-9332 Flame Proof Zone Monitor Interface.

Commissioning, Indicator Verification, and Reset Procedures

Once wired and powered, the detector operates with a quiescent standby current of ≤60 μA. The integrated 360-degree viewing red LED provides visual confirmation by flashing during normal polling cycles. In an active alarm state, the detector draws ≤30 mA and the red LED illuminates continuously. Clearing an alarm state requires an instantaneous loop power interruption lasting a minimum duration of 5 seconds, dropping the circuit voltage down to a maximum of 2.5 VDC. For ongoing maintenance and dust mitigation, the optical sensing chamber is removable for straightforward field inspection and servicing.
