Power Supply and Instant Switchover Diagnostics
The Ahuja SSB-45EM operates from dual power inputs: AC mains (220–240V at 50/60Hz, consuming 110VA) and external DC 12V (consuming 2A). If the amplifier fails to power on or drops out during operation, verify that the AC supply voltage is within the 220–240V operating range. For installations utilizing continuous battery backup (they are not included), ensure that the DC polarity on the rear terminals is connected correctly. The unit is designed with an automatic instant transfer mechanism that shifts power seamlessly to the 12V DC battery supply (they are not included) during an AC power failure. If the amplifier shuts off when AC mains drops, inspect the external 12V battery (they are not included) voltage level, cable gauge, and terminal contact resistance.
Speaker Terminal Impedance and Line Matching Rectification
Audio distortion, thermal cut-offs, or low acoustic output typically stem from incorrect speaker load impedance or configuration errors across the output taps (4Ω, 8Ω, 16Ω, and 100V line):
- Low-Impedance Connections (4Ω, 8Ω, 16Ω): Ensure that total connected speaker network impedance matches the selected tap exactly. Connecting a speaker load below 4Ω forces excessive current draw beyond the 45W RMS rated threshold, elevating Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) above the rated 10% THD at 45W RMS or 2% THD at 30W RMS.
- Distributed 100V Line System: When using the 100V output tap, all connected ceiling speakers, horn speakers, or sound columns must be equipped with Line Matching Transformers (LMT). Never connect standard low-impedance voice coils directly to the 100V terminal.
- Regulation Check: Output voltage regulation is rated at ≤ 2 dB from no load to full load at 1kHz. Significant level drops when adding speakers indicate an overloaded output tap exceeding the 45W RMS / 64W Max limit.
Input Sensitivity, Feedback Suppression, and Microphone Matching
The amplifier includes 3 Microphone input channels rated at 0.65mV / 4.7kΩ sensitivity and 1 Auxiliary input rated at 100mV / 470kΩ sensitivity, maintaining a Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratio of 60 dB across a frequency response of 100 Hz to 15,000 Hz ±3dB.
- Acoustic Feedback and Howling: Due to the sensitive 0.65mV / 4.7kΩ mic input stage, high-gain settings in reflective acoustic environments can cause acoustic resonance. Utilize low-impedance dynamic microphones such as the Ahuja ASM-580XLR, AUD-101, or AUD-77DX to minimize feedback and howling.
- Tone Control Attenuation: Apply the integrated cut-type tone controls to mitigate low-frequency rumble and high-frequency screech. The cut-type Bass control provides up to -10dB attenuation at 100Hz, while the cut-type Treble control provides up to -10dB attenuation at 10kHz.
- Auxiliary Input Distortion: Ensure line-level audio playback sources (CD players, media streamers, laptops) are routed exclusively to the Aux input (100mV / 470kΩ) and not into the 0.65mV mic inputs to avoid front-end input clipping.
Preamp Output and System Chaining
If audio is absent or distorted when linking the Ahuja SSB-45EM to an external booster amplifier or recording console, inspect the Preamp output connection rated at 200mV / 600Ω. Ensure the receiving booster amplifier or recorder line-input accepts a 200mV unbalanced feed. Verify that the intermediate interconnect cable does not exceed line run limitations to preserve the 100 Hz to 15,000 Hz frequency response.
