FAQ

Which chemicals and application environments are compatible with 3M 764 vinyl tape?

Answer:
3M 764 vinyl tape bonds to clean, dry surfaces at 16°C to 27°C (60°F to 80°F) and resists most standard industrial solvents. It is incompatible with ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and esters, which can cause the PVC backing to swell or curl.

3M™ General Purpose Vinyl Tape 764 is engineered with a pigmented polyvinyl chloride backing and a rubber adhesive formulated to conform to both flat and irregular surfaces during holding, bundling, and marking operations.

Key environmental and chemical resistance considerations include:

  • Application Substrate: Best results are achieved on dry, clean surfaces applied within an ambient temperature window of 60°F to 80°F (16°C to 27°C).
  • Solvent Resistance: The vinyl backing provides resistance against moisture and most routine industrial cleaning solvents.
  • Chemical Incompatibilities: Exposure to ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and esters (commonly found in lacquer thinners, paint strippers, and aggressive degreasers) must be avoided, as these compounds penetrate the PVC backing and cause swelling, lifting, or edge curling.
  • Storage Conditions: Rolls should be maintained in original cartons at 60°F to 80°F (16°C to 27°C) and 40% to 60% relative humidity, offering an 18-month shelf life from date of manufacture.
