What chemical and solvent limitations apply to 3M 764 Red Vinyl Tape?

Answer:
While the vinyl backing resists most common industrial solvents, it is not compatible with ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, or esters found in paint strippers, thinners, lacquers, and degreasers, which cause the PVC backing to swell or curl.

3M 764 vinyl tape provides good resistance to general industrial handling and common mild solvents. However, careful consideration of chemical exposure is required during deployment.

Exposure to ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and esters must be avoided. These aggressive solvents—frequently found in commercial paint thinners, lacquers, industrial degreasers, and paint stripping compounds—attack the polyvinyl chloride matrix, causing the tape backing to swell, wrinkle, or lift away from the substrate. For optimal adhesion, apply only to clean, dry surfaces at temperatures between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C).
