FAQ

What surface conditions and chemical environments are compatible with 3M 764 tape?

Answer:
The tape bonds best to clean, dry surfaces applied between 60°F and 80°F (16°C to 27°C) and resists most routine industrial solvents. Avoid contact with ketones, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and esters (such as those in thinners, degreasers, or paint strippers), which cause the vinyl backing to swell or curl.

For proper adhesion, 3M 764 White vinyl tape requires application to surfaces that are thoroughly degreased, dry, and free of loose particulate matter. The manufacturer-recommended application temperature window is 60°F to 80°F (16°C to 27°C), with an operational service temperature range of 60°F to 85°F (16°C to 29°C).

In terms of chemical resistance:

  • Compatible: Resists water, moisture, and most routine, dilute industrial solvents encountered in clean environments.
  • Incompatible: Chemical exposure to ketones (e.g., acetone, MEK), chlorinated hydrocarbons, and esters found in lacquers, industrial thinners, paint strippers, and aggressive degreasers must be avoided, as these agents cause the PVC backing to soften, swell, or curl away from the substrate.
